Newport Cove
Suburban Neighborhood in Grayslake, Illinois
Lake County 60002
Steel piers jutting out from a well-lit beachfront
Forty percent of Newport Cove is made up of communal open space, laden with native plants, pedestrian trails and the Bluff Lake shoreline dotted with lights for nighttime walks. It’s not uncommon to see golf carts driving by on their way to one of the neighborhood's marinas. Permanent piers include slips available to residents for lease or purchase. From here, motorboat captains and kayakers access the 14 other lakes and 45 miles of river in the Chain O’Lakes. "Lake life slows down in the winter, but the ice fishermen come out and people have their snowmobiles," Goldstein says. Licensed anglers cast their lines for white crappie, channel catfish, sunfish and more. The neighborhood itself lacks sidewalks and bike trails, but Turner Lake Fen Nature Preserve is about a 10-mile drive away around the bend of Lake Marie for a longer hike through forested terrain. From Waterfront and Estates to The Cottages of Newport Cove
Lanes of older homes with private docks line Newport Cove, helping shape a vacation getaway vibe. Stone outcroppings and statement trees decorate well-maintained yards. Local homeowner association rules prohibit boats, sheds and trailers on them. Multiple options for home ownership exist here, as the community is broken up further into specific sections. Custom builds are erected at the Estates, a cluster of homes inland from the water ranging from 2,200 to 3,500 square feet plus basement space. At Waterfront, home sizes start at 2,500 square feet and go up to 4,200. Walkout basements provide the clearest path to Bluff Lake and its amenities. Buyers can bring their own builders or choose from select providers who have built in Newport Cove before, such as in-house builder New American Housing. "It's a mixed bag, people have gotten their own general contractors or used one of the in-house options," Goldstein says. "Maki Construction has built a couple in the neighborhood as well. And there’s an HOA, so buying comes with rules to keep the aesthetics of the neighborhood in that Nantucket, coastal style." All designs for new custom homes must be approved by the Newport Cove architectural committee. Remaining open lots cost between $88,000 to $95,000 in Estates and $250,000 to $350,000 in Waterfront; once built, homes can go for anywhere from $560,000 to $1.2 million, depending on size and proximity to the lake. Thirty-one spots for smaller tract homes encircle a drive south of the custom areas called The Cottages of Newport Cove. These self-proclaimed cottages come in four styles—Stillwater, Moonriver, Highmeadow and Bluelake—each with their own coastal design elements, and each includes a two-car garage and perks like stainless steel appliances and lifetime roofing. Plots here range from $56,000 to $80,000, while existing homes range from $450,000 to $570,000.Dining on Bluff Lake and shopping in downtown Antioch
The closest dining options to home are all waterfront, and residents walk, drive or hop in the boat and cruise to one of the area’s many bars and restaurants. Sunset Grill Antioch serves up standard pub fare from its Bluff Lake marina, alongside Steitz’s Resort, another longtime Chain O’ Lakes marina and grill. The Sandbar Bar & Grille sits off Lake Marie, and heading south on the channel through Grass Lake leads to Krabby J’s retro-cabin-themed haunt. Many of these joints have a rotating schedule of live music. Meanwhile, the village center of Antioch is about 3 miles north of Newport Cove for shopping at Jewel-Osco or Piggly Wiggly or the area’s collection of casual eateries and boutique storefronts.Schools for Newport Cove students, from Pre-K through 12th grade
Grass Lake School District No. 36 deploys buses to pick Newport Cove students up from Bluff Lake Road and other nearby stops. Grass Lake Elementary School serves prekindergarten through eighth grade and scores a B from Niche. Antioch Community High School, which gets an A-minus, still stands in the same spot where it was established in 1915, though numerous renovations have since transformed the campus. The administration selects a Student of the Month and a Staff Member of the Month to honor on their website. Classes also incorporate Brainfuse, an online platform for tutoring, an online writing lab, study tools like flashcard generators and more.Getting from Antioch to Chicago and Milwaukee
When they’re not boating up the Chain, residents reach most of their essentials by taking Illinois Route 173 east to west through Antioch, Route 59 to other northwest Chicago suburbs, or Route 83 to cross the Wisconsin state line. Downtown Antioch is also home to the closest Metra station, the final stop on the North Central Service line to downtown Chicago. Those driving the 57 miles to the Windy City or 52 miles to Milwaukee head east to Interstate 94, a tolled freeway. They also take I-94 to reach Chicago O’Hare International Airport in 42 miles. Newport Cove is also a good 16 miles to the nearest emergency room at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.Events in nearby Antioch
Mannequins decked out in period clothing fill downtown Antioch's Kringle's Christmas Village during Dickens Holiday Village, a yearly tradition celebrating the author's fictional universe. The town center also hosts seasonal parades during the holidays and on the Fourth of July. The rest of the year, folks buy tickets for performances at the Palette, Masque and Lyre—home base for Antioch’s theater company of over 50 years.
