Access to recreation and Turners Falls draws residents to Gill
Gill is a rural Massachusetts neighborhood partially outlined by the Connecticut River. The community of about 1,500 sits just across the water from Turners Falls, with Interstate 91 a few miles away and the Vermont state line less than 10 miles north. Gill is removed from the bustling environment on the other side of the river, but the access to Turners Falls and outdoor recreation, ranging from protected forests to river paddling and fishing, draws residents to the neighborhood. The quiet, peaceful atmosphere, with homes clustered around the river and spread out farther inland, serves as a tranquil New England escape.
Massachusetts protected lands and the Connecticut River are nearby
The Connecticut River is a local favorite for fishing and boating. On the south side, Barton Cove offers access to the river. “Gill is pretty famous for Barton Cove,” says Cathy Roberts, a Realtor with Cohn & Company Real Estate. “People can kayak, there’s camping there and it’s a very pretty area.” The Heritage Riverboat Cruise takes passengers up and down the river. Residents with boats can dock at Franklin County Boat Club. Just north, Bennett Meadow Wildlife Management Area offers hunting and camping on more than 100 acres of land. The Griswold GTD Conservation Area has hiking and cross-country skiing. Recreation in the area surrounding Gill also includes:
The Canalside Rail Trail, which runs from Turners Falls to East Deerfield
Warwick State Forest, with over 10,000 acres of protected land
Oak Ridge GC, which offers disc golf
Crumpin-Fox Golf Club, with a public 18-hole course
Housing concentrated close to the Connecticut River
Homes are spread throughout Gill, typically closer together the nearer to the river you get. Architectural designs vary widely. “Styles are all over the place,” Roberts says. “There are Cape Cods, cottages, farmhouses, gambrels – it’s a mix.” The community also includes colonial-style homes, ranch-style homes and custom designs. Many date to the 1930s, and while some sit on multiple acres, those close to the river are often on lots of less than an acre. Most sell for between $350,000 and $500,000. Gill earns the lowest possible CAP Index crime score with a 1 out of 10.
College preparation at Northfield Mount Hermon
On the north end of Gill, Northfield Mount Hermon is a top-rated private school. It enrolls grades 9 through 12, offers co-ed enrollment and focuses on college preparation. “It’s a huge draw to the area and a huge employer,” Roberts says. Gill Elementary School hosts kindergarten through sixth grade within the community.
Major state routes on either end of Gill
Two state routes run through the car-dependent community. On the north end, Massachusetts Route 10 runs near Northfield Mount Hermon on its way to the Vermont state line. Route 2A runs through the southern part of the community. Besides Turners Falls, the closest town is Greenfield, about 7 miles west. “It’s pretty accessible,” Roberts says. “There’s easy access to 91, which you just go down the road a few miles and you can pick it up and go north and south.” The interchange with Interstate 91 is about 4 miles west. Amherst is less than 25 miles south and Springfield sits nearly 50 miles in the same direction. Boston is about 100 miles east.
Classic American fare at the Gill Tavern
The Gill Tavern is the neighborhood’s most centrally located restaurant, serving drinks and American dishes five days a week. On the south side, The Wagon Wheel Restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating near the river. “The Gill Tavern is an old-fashioned tavern,” Roberts says. “It’s small, but the food there is fabulous. The Wagon Wheel is more riverside, drive-by eats like hamburgers and French fries. Both restaurants are great.” The Brewery at Four Star Farms sits across the river on the east side, offers craft drinks and hosts events like craft nights and live music. Across the river, local stores and a Food City sit in Turners Falls. “People do their shopping in Turners Falls,” Roberts says. Residents can also head less than 20 miles east to Walmart and Hannaford in the town of Orange.
