Kings Mill
An American suburb with a regal British touch
The streets of Kings Mill are aptly named for British towns and castles, from Coxton Tower Court to Pickering Road. But despite this neighborhood’s regal flair, Kings Mill is an all-American suburb. While a handful of new construction houses recently hit the market, most of this firmly rooted suburb is comprised of late 20th-century housing. Most homes were built between the 1980s and ‘90s and sit on quarter-acre lots, with a few new constructions popping up on slightly narrower plots. Ranch-style homes are common, along with New Traditionals, Colonial Revivals and brick Millenium Mansions. While older homes list between $250,000 and $370,000, newer houses can sell from $400,000 to $530,000. Though only about half of the streets here are lined by sidewalks, the wide and winding roads are considered a safe enough place for a walk.Guilford County Schools and a famed alumnus
Guilford County Schools, the third-largest school district in North Carolina, services the area. According to Niche, Millis Road Elementary earns an A-minus rating, Jamestown Middle receives a B-minus and Lucy Ragsdale High scores a B-plus. Larry Ogunjobi, a professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers and a Ragsdale High alumnus, returns to the high school each summer to host a free youth football camp.Relax on the lakefront at Hester Park
About a mile from the neighborhood is Hester Park, a scenic city green space set against a 6-acre lake. This little slice of nature is popular for anglers thanks to its four fishing piers, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Parkgoers looking to get active can tackle the fitness trail or hit the tennis courts for a match. There’s also family fun to be had at the horseshoe pits or on the playground, with spots to stop and picnic around the lake. There’s recreation closer to home at Ruckus Climbing Gym, an indoor rock-climbing gym offering day passes and memberships for climbers of all levels. Sedgefield Country Club is just south of Kings Mill, situated on an 18-hole golf course with a Tudor Revival clubhouse. This member-only club hosts year-round events but is best known as the home of the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship.Shopping centers line Gate City Boulevard
Across the street from the neighborhood entrance on Kings Mill Road is Hunt Village at Sedgefield, a modest shopping center with a couple of places to grab a bite. Jerusalem Market is a beloved Middle Eastern deli, popular for a quick sandwich or authentic Mediterranean dishes. Box Seat is the neighborhood’s sports bar that’s busiest on game nights but is always reliable for beer and wings. Other shopping centers are scattered along Gate City Boulevard, and there’s a Harris Teeter, Lidl, Aldi and Walmart, all within a 2-mile radius. “That area has changed a lot over the past five years,” Cox says. “We’ve got a new Publix and a bunch of restaurants, all kinds of things that part of town didn’t have before.” About 3 miles up the road is Four Seasons Towne Center, home to big-name shopping and plenty of entertainment. The mall is anchored by Dillard’s and JCPenney and has other brand-name retailers in between. Round 1 Bowling and Arcade is ideal for a fun night out and those wanting to catch the latest blockbuster can visit AmStar Cinemas Four Seasons Station.Close to Interstate 73 but without the sounds of traffic
Kings Mill borders Interstate 73, making it convenient to hop on the highway. “The elevation is a bit different and there’s enough separation that you don’t hear the highway from the neighborhood,” Cox says. “Some parts of the neighborhood might hear it a little, but it’s mostly pretty quiet.” While Downtown Greensboro is roughly 10 miles northeast, those working in other points of the Triad have a convenient commute as well. High Point is 12 miles Southwest, and Winston-Salem is about 25 miles directly west. The Piedmont Triad International Airport is also approximately 11 miles northwest via I-73. Although most residents will need a vehicle to get around this car-dependent area, buses under the Greensboro Transit Agency stop at several points along West Gate City Boulevard, another bustling thoroughfare that runs past the neighborhood.
