Wilmington's first upscale suburb
Westover Hills, located just outside city limits, was developed as Wilmington's first upscale suburban residential zone in 1927. Nearly a century later, sprawling historic estates stand alongside modern Neo-Colonial architecture on expansive, carefully manicured lawns. With its focus on luxury amenities, Westover Hills's reputation remains unchanged as the entry point to its most exclusive neighborhoods. "It's the gateway to 'chateau country,'" says Monica Hill, a 25-year veteran with RE/MAX Associates-Wilmington. "It's that old character and charm without being in the countryside."

"It's just a place you drive through and say, 'Ah, how beautiful is this?'" Homes generally have at least 2,000 square feet, many easily doubling that. Tudor homes, French Country Modern and ranch-style dwellings can be found in the area, but the most common variety is Colonial, which begins in the low $700,000s. Remodeled rambler-style homes can reach the high $800,000s, while a historic Colonial on 1 acre of land will run $1.7 million.
