The city of Greenwood, located on the eastern edge of the Mississippi Delta, is steeped in the region's history, from its prominent role in the birth of the blues to its place in the Civil Rights movement. But while there is an appeal to the abundance of museums, the Blues and Freedom trails and its place as a Bonafide Hollywood star, the people living in this city of about 13,000 appreciate the culture, sense of community and small-town feel. “You’re never gonna see a traffic jam. If you do see a traffic jam, I get a call,” says Mayor Carolyn McAdams. “If you want a low-key, still-active life, you can get that right here.”
Greenwood was founded by John Williams, who established a trading post on the Yazoo River in the early 19th century.
Downtown Greenwood is known for its historic brick roads, which add to the city's charm and character.

Historic homes for less than the national
Homes in Greenwood are primarily single-family, with older models located closer to Grand Boulevard and north of the Yazoo River. “We have lots of historic housing that people like to buy, because it’s relatively inexpensive,” McAdams says. “A lot of people from all over have come here and bought these houses to renovate, and they end up living here because they like it so much.”
Ranch houses are popular, as well as cottages, bungalows and Cape Cods. Stately neoclassical homes line River Road. Baptist Town is a historically Black neighborhood east of downtown with similar small cottages and bungalows. The median home price is $125,000, less than one-third of the national median.
