Community gardening and firetruck playground at Thom Park
Historic Southeast has meticulously maintained green spaces, and those exploding with wild, colorful foliage. At the center of the neighborhood, Thom Park has a firetruck-themed playground to keep children busy while enterprising parents tend to their respective plots in the park’s community garden. A trail carves through a mossy forest painted with vibrant green and yellow leaves to reveal the running track behind Dexter McCarty Middle School.Main City Park, one of downtown Gresham’s unique green spaces, is immediately west of the neighborhood. Though the Gresham Japanese Garden takes up a small portion of the park’s total acreage, it’s one of the most recognized sections of the city park. Established as Tsuru Island—from the Japanese word for “crane”—by the Gresham-Troutdale chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, the impeccably maintained garden is a space of peace, tranquility and longevity.
Range of 20th-century architecture comprises Historic Southeast
The homes in Historic Southeast truly represent the architectural evolution of the city throughout the last half of the 20th century. Traditional ranch-style homes and modest bungalows built from the 1950s through the 1970s cost between $375,000 and $490,000. In the hillier landscape of the neighborhood’s southside, split-levels and raised ranch-style homes are carved into gently sloping lots. More recent builds, like new traditional homes with Craftsman details that are characteristic of the 2000s, and contemporary single-level houses fetch from $450,000 to $550,000. Homes come with fenced backyards designed with gardening and hosting summer barbecues in mind, otherwise framed by mature trees that paint the landscape in rich hues during the autumn season.Authentic 1950s diner; Mexican food and groceries
The neighborhood marks the transition between a primarily residential area and an energetic downtown. “There’s lots of foot traffic and lots of community events, so if I am trying to market my business, I can almost always walk over to the splash pad in the Arts Plaza and find a crowd or a community gathering,” Salter says. The Arts Plaza hosts events like the Gresham Farmers Market and the Music Mondays concert series throughout the warmer months.Though much of the neighborhood is walkable to downtown Gresham, with its eateries and small businesses, Historic Southeast has its neighborhood establishments. Polar King is a true vintage diner—having opened its doors in 1952—that serves all-day breakfast, with dishes like corned beef hash, steak and eggs and omelets smothered with Southern-style gravy. On the same street, the Agave Azul Mexican Restaurant is a cheerful place to enjoy sizzling fajita plates and the “best margaritas in the city,” albeit self-proclaimed. Mexican food enthusiasts will find ingredients and other imports at Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupe Grocery Market and La Tapatia Market across the street. Otherwise, Walmart Neighborhood Market, WinCo Foods and Fred Meyer are farther east.
Powell Boulevard and Interstate 84 run to Portland
Powell Boulevard, also known as Oregon state Route 26, runs through the neighborhood, connecting it to both downtown Gresham and downtown Portland, less than 19 miles away. Hogan Street travels north toward Interstate 84, often the fastest route downtown because of traffic. A few TriMet bus lines connect the neighborhood to other parts of Gresham and Troutdale, while bus 9 takes passengers to downtown and Old Town Portland.Journalism students at Gresham High manage The Argus
Children may begin their education at East Gresham Elementary School, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. From there, they may attend Dexter McCarty Middle School before advancing to Gresham High School, both of which earn C grades. The high school offers a wide variety of courses in addition to the standard curriculum, such as three different levels of Japanese and career technical education programs in automotive technology, construction, business and marketing, early childhood education and integrated media. Journalism courses are also available, and students run an active online newspaper—The Argus—complete with feature stories and opinion pieces.
