Convenient location near highways and military bases
Located northwest of Honolulu, Halawa is a community of 15,000 people. This centrally-located residential area sits at the intersection of major highways and is close to retail and attractions. “If you’re coming from Honolulu, going to the west, it’s the first place you hit before any traffic backups, which can be 20 to 30 minutes during rush hours,” says Neal Tachibana, broker/owner at Realty Edge Inc. Several military bases, including Pearl Harbor, are nearby; this proximity makes the area a popular community for those on active duty. “There’s a military base on top of Halawa Heights, and any other major military bases are within 10 minutes,” Tachibana adds. Aloha Stadium, the largest outdoor arena in Hawaii, sits on the west side of Halawa. The stadium is currently being rebuilt, and the area around it will turn into an entertainment district, Tachibana says.
Nearby Downtown Honolulu is only a ten minute drive during non-peak hours.
There are still parts of Halawa that are dedicated to agricultural activities.

Suburb with larger lots than other Hawaii communities
Halawa has condos, townhouses and single-family homes. “In Halawa, your lot sizes are above the Hawaii standard of around 5,000 square feet. Here, your lots can be up to 10,000 square feet,” Tachibana says. Condos and townhouses are in the Crosspointe community or towards Pearl Harbor, and the Foster Village section has million-dollar modern bungalows. North of the interstates is the Halawa Heights neighborhood, a hilly section of the community that includes midcentury modern homes with driveways. Most houses are from the 20th century, usually built between the 1950s and 1980s. “Halawa is in the valley and hillside so depending on what area you live in, you can have nice ocean views,” Tachibana says. The median home price is $1.2 million, which is about $22,000 less than the median home price in Honolulu. The median townhouse price is $630,000.
Many of Halawa's residential areas have wide streets with convenient bike lanes.
Larger homes in Halawa are listed for 2-4 million dollars.

Campgrounds and hiking trails at Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Halawa is full of nature areas and trails for residents. Halawa District Park has athletic courts and a playground, and the 384-acre Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area is north of the city. The sprawling park includes several campgrounds, picnic areas and a looped hiking trail. The Pearl Harbor Bike Path stretches over 5 miles along the coast, and golf courses are planted all around the city. Moanalua Golf Club is the oldest course in the state with nine holes. Memberships to the Honolulu Country Club include access to its 18-hole course, swimming pool and luxury clubhouse. Folks can skate around the rink at Ice Palace Hawaii. Ke’ehi Lagoon Beach Park is 5 miles east near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Visitors can take peaceful walks on the beach or watch planes taking off.
The Waimano Valley offers miles of wide and shaded trails.
Hikers will enjoy the 5 mile Aiea Loop Trial located in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreational Area.

Easy access to shopping in Aiea
Locals can find shopping and dining along Moanalua Road towards Aiea and Hawaii Route 99. “If you’re living in Halawa, you can easily get to the west side to go shopping,” Tachibana says. Pearlridge Center is the largest indoor shopping mall in the state. Here, shoppers will find national names like Bath & Body Works and Macy’s, while diners can find over 70 restaurants. Target is south of the area towards the Salt Lake community, and locally-owned establishments, including bake shops and American restaurants, are scattered along city streets. The Aiea Town Square and the Aiea Shopping Center are across from one another; these plazas have Korean, Hawaiian and Vietnamese restaurants.
Pearlridge Center is the main retail for residents of Pearl City, Aiea, and Halawa.
There are several smaller retail outlets in Halawa which offer local restaurants and shops.

Adjacent to Pearl Harbor National Memorial
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is outside the city on the south end. Visitors can learn the base’s history before the December 7, 1941 attacks. The memorial includes the names of the 2,300 civilians and military members who lost their lives, as well as a visitor center and walking paths. “The Arizona memorial is a high tourist attraction, and on December 7th, there’s the big ceremony,” Tachibana says. Aloha Stadium is home to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Football Team. It is the only stadium in the state with other major events, including the Swap Meet and Marketplace, which showcases over 400 local businesses, food trucks and other entertainment. When the new Aloha Stadium opens, it will be the center of a brand-new entertainment district, Tachibana says. “It’s being torn down and rebuilt, so that area is going to become much more of a hub in the long term with hotels, new housing and things like that,” he says.
The Pearl Harbor museum is only a few minutes drive south of Halawa.
Every Oahu resident should pay a visit to the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Halawa.

The only fog comes when the Ka-au Crater erupts,” says Tachibana. Halawa’s climate is drier than the rest of Oahu; it averages 20 to 40 inches of rain annually.
The well-maintained Manana Trail is a popular outdoors area for Halawa residents.
