Halls Crossroads is growing with subdivisions and shopping plazas
Halls Crossroads is a quickly growing suburban extension of Knoxville, known for its shopping and new homes. The area gets its name from the Hall family and the shop they set up along the Maynardville Pike and Emory Road crossroads in the 1860s, fittingly named Halls Crossroads. Since then, many stores and subdivisions have branched out from the main roads, and Halls, as locals call it, is still growing. "There used to be a lot more open land in the area, but developers are buying it up to turn into housing developments," says Rebecca Carter, an affiliate broker at The Carter Group of eXp Realty with 15 years of experience in the area. Despite the area's steady residential growth, "It's still more rural and more suburban than neighborhoods closer to the city," Carter says. "So, there's more space, and it's quieter."

Modern housing styles with a wide price range
A few older houses are in the area, like ranch-style homes from the 1950s and Cape Cods and farmhouses from earlier decades. These older and smaller homes usually sell between $160,000 and $290,000. Many homes in Halls Crossroads, however, were built from 1970 onward. Modern Craftsman, modern ramblers and other large styles in subdivisions sell between $300,000 and $770,000. A few new traditional and Colonial Revival mansions have sold for as high as $1.4 million recently, especially those in the Shadow Creek and Mount Royal subdivisions. The median price in Halls Crossroads is $365,000, about $30,000 less than Knoxville's median price and about $40,000 less than the national median. "It's a little bit cheaper to live in Halls than in the western part of Knoxville and Knox County," Carter says.

Empty storefronts and strip malls are filling again with stores
Large shopping plazas along Emory Road, Maynardville Pike and South U.S. Highway 441 grew quickly in the late 1900s and early 2000s. However, the changing economy left some storefronts and warehouses empty for years. "The shopping area is back on the rise, though," Carter says. "That intersection off Emory Road is growing with restaurants and shops." Aldi and Walmart Supercenter are the newest significant additions, built in the past five years. Chain restaurants, auto sellers, furniture stores and specialty shops are also open. Bel Aire Burgers is a standout restaurant in the neighborhood, known for its burgers, shakes and steaks. The casual eatery is designed with car lovers in mind, using highway signage, gas station pumps and racing memorabilia as décor.

A short drive from Knoxville and a main interstate
Emory Road, Maynardville Pike and South U.S. Highway 441 are the main roads connecting Halls Crossroads to the rest of Knox County and Knoxville. "So, people can hop on and get around pretty easily," Carter says. Downtown Knoxville is about 20 minutes, or 13 miles, from Halls Crossroads. Carter says a lot of residents commute to downtown Knoxville and other places in the area. McGhee Tyson Airport has cargo, military and commercial flights and is 24 miles south. The nearest hospital, North Knoxville Medical Center, is about 4 miles from the center of Halls.

A recreational trail, community park and private golf course
Halls Community Park is the spot for adult and youth baseball leagues, with six diamonds of varying sizes. The large field at the other end of the park's parking lot doubles as a soccer and football field, lit at night for evening games and practices. Halls Greenway, a 2.4-mile paved trail for biking and jogging, goes through the dense tree line behind the park, leading to the local library. Beaver Brook Golf & Country Club is a hilly, private golf course that overlooks far-off ridges on the horizon.
