The Biggest Little City in Kansas
Although it’s a town of just 2,200 people, Halstead has many amenities that homebuyers can find in larger cities, leading to its nickname of the Biggest Little City in Kansas. “It’s a small bedroom community of Wichita, but it’s also a really pretty town,” says Beth Ann Kingsley, owner of The Real Estate Company in Halstead. “We have brick streets downtown. We have three parks and five restaurants. The school system is also one of the main draws here.” Halstead-Bentley Unified School District 440 receives a B rating from Niche overall, with each school in the district also earning high ratings. In addition to the parks and restaurants in the city, residents and businesses also have access to fiber-optic high-speed internet through a partnership with IdeaTek, making it easy to stay connected. The commute to Wichita is about 20 to 30 miles, making it easy to get to the city for work and come home to enjoy life in Halstead.
A century's worth of homes
Homebuyers can find a mix of styles in Halstead, ranging from century-old bungalows to ranch-style homes from the 1970s. The city is seeing some growth, with new traditional homes popping up in parts of town. “There is new development on the southeast side of town. I would say at least one-third of my buyers are from out of state,” says Kingsley. Older homes in the city typically have spacious front porches, and some even have wrap-around porches. Newer homes often have built-in garages. Houses are close enough to give the area a small-town city feel, but they are spread out enough that residents have privacy and room for activities in the yard. Mature trees line the streets, casting shade over the homes. A two-bedroom house in Halstead might cost around $130,000. Three and four-bedroom homes can cost between $200,000 and $250,000.
