Living in a historic Hampton neighborhood
The Hampton Roads metropolitan area is known as “America’s First Region,” so it’s no surprise that the Westhampton neighborhood is steeped in history. The community traces its history to the 1607 voyagers who first established Jamestown as an English colony, and later became home to Hampton University, a historically black research university founded in 1868 to provide education for formerly enslaved and indigenous people. More recently, Hampton has become a destination for tourism, commerce and recreation, and residents enjoy access to museums, entertainment venues, retail stores and historical points of interest.
Westhampton homes in a peaceful community
Residents in Westhampton enjoy quiet suburban streetscapes with open-sky vistas and northerly saltwater breezes from the Chesapeake Bay. The neighborhood’s modest single-family homes line the long, narrow grid-shaped blocks, where the ample off-street parking allows enough room for locals to walk their dogs on the edge of the streets. The housing market consists of traditional Cape Cods with dormer and double-hung windows, ranch-style homes with renovated attic spaces, modest bungalows and two-story traditional homes built within the last 15 years. Home prices range from $200,000 to $300,000, $50,000 less than in surrounding Hampton neighborhoods. “The market is more active in Hampton than in other areas,” says Liz Kilby, supervising broker at the James River Newport News office with Long & Foster Real Estate. “Between the naval bases in Norfolk and the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, we’ve got lots of military personnel coming and going, so we don’t experience some of the ups and downs of other housing markets.”

Shopping and dining along Settlers Landing Road
While the sidewalks lining the quiet residential streets throughout Westhampton are great for walking the dog, locals must drive into one of the surrounding neighborhoods for retail, groceries and restaurants or utilize the robust public transportation along Settlers Landing Road. Food Lion and Swami Food Store are the most convenient spots for groceries, and major retailers like Lowe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and The Home Depot are located a few exits north along Interstate 64. Small local take-out restaurants like Kim’s Chinese Food, Wilkes Bar-B-Q and Philly Station offer quick and convenient dinner options, while the White Oak Lodge invites diners to relax and enjoy the live music, pool tables, big-screen TVs and classic pub-grub menu in their laid-back atmosphere.

Heading outdoors in Westhampton
Eason Memorial Park sits at the center of the Westhampton neighborhood, offering residents a spot for playdates at the updated playground, scenic walks along the winding pedestrian trails, sandlot-style ball games among the large greenspace, or quiet contemplation under the shaded pavilion. The community park shares a parking lot with Darling Stadium, an 8,000-seat stadium that hosts regional high school athletic competitions with an 8-lane track and multi-use field that are open to the public when not being used by one of the local high schools. Westhampton is close to the banks of the James River and Chesapeake Bay, and residents have access to the public fishing piers and boat docks at James River Dock, a small river access point near the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park. On rainy days, locals can explore the shelves within the Hampton Public Library, or touch the more than 100 hands-on exhibits at the Virginia Air & Space Center, a museum and educational facility in partnership with NASA’s Langley Research Center.
