While a small borough of just over 10,000 residents, Hasbrouck Heights is a “shining city on a hill” to its residents. This community is full of heart just as much as it is of history and homes, with family-run businesses and small parks giving this community a warmth that has kept it close-knit and in-demand with homebuyers.
Formerly a farming community known as “Corona,” the borough of Hasbrouck Heights was created in 1894 and renamed both to honor a local railroad manager and to avoid confusion with the more famous Corona, Queens. Hasbrouck Heights’ population rapidly increased from the 1900s to 1920s as railroads and trolleys enabled Bergen County to become a booming suburb of New York City. Much of Hasbrouck Heights’ housing dates to these early years, from American Foursquares built in 1928 to bungalows and colonial-style homes reflecting contemporary tastes. Hasbrouck Heights’ homes range in price from $550,000 to $700,000, in line with Bergen County’s typical ranges.
Realtor Jennifer Romero of RE/MAX Lifestyles says of Hasbrouck Heights, “It’s very small, close-knit, family-oriented type of town. There are parks, they do an annual street fair, and they have a lot of different activities in the school districts. Hasbrouck Heights has a very popular restaurant, The Heights Bar & Grill, and there are a lot of different types of eateries.” Boulevard, the central thoroughfare of Hasbrouck Heights, connects these amenities, with the small Miers Playground at one end and the touching Hasbrouck Heights 9/11 Memorial Park at the other. Along this avenue are restaurants such as the popular Heights Bar & Grill – known for its large burgers, its crispy fries, and its flavorful chicken parmesan subs – and Hasbrouck Heights Pizza, a family-run business that prides itself on its pizza’s quality. One of the most famous establishments in town is Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices & Ice Cream, which has been selling Italian ices and ice cream since 1928, becoming an iconic landmark of Hasbrouck Heights.
Romero also says, “It’s easy to get to New York, and there’s plenty to do in town. It’s definitely becoming more popular with homebuyers.” Aspiring Hasbrouck Heights residents have access to major conveniences such as a Costco Wholesale and a Walmart Supercenter at the Teterboro Landing shopping mall, as well as Teterboro Airport, a small airfield popular for private flights both across the country and the world. Travel conveniences are not just limited to the air, however; the Pascack Valley Line runs trains through Hasbrouck Heights to Secaucus Junction, from which commuters can take trains into the heart of New York City and emerge from New York Penn Station just blocks from the Empire State Building.
Hasbrouck Heights’ students attend one of two elementary schools, Hasbrouck Heights Middle School, and Hasbrouck Heights High School. The local high school has consistently ranked among the very top public high schools in the state, as well as having a renowned football team with a legacy of sectional championships starting in the 1940s and continuing into the 2010s.
Hasbrouck Heights’ rail access to New York and its location at the intersection of several major highways puts commuters in a highly convenient situation, while its unique local businesses give homebuyers a close-knit community to cherish.
