Mount Eden

Newer communities and Mediterranean-style homes
Mount Eden’s wide residential streets feature paved sidewalks and are lined with vibrant trees from California bay laurels to oaks. Most subdivisions display mainly two-story homes, but a few subdivisions, particularly in the southern portion of the neighborhood, have a housing tract of primarily one-level properties. The housing landscape is architecturally mixed, with the most common design being Mediterranean styles painted with soft pastel colors and mid-century ranches. “The neighborhood has newer communities,” says Hernandez. “Average Hayward homes were built in the 1950s, while a lot of these were built in the ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s, and some offer generously sized lots.” Housing prices typically go from $825,000 to $1.3 million for three- to four-bedroom homes with recent renovations. The neighborhood also has a few 55-plus manufactured home communities, including Eden Gardens Estates. The community’s lineup of mid-century style manufactured homes ranges from $150,00 to $300,000.Public schools with advanced college prep programs
The area is zoned for the Hayward Unified School District, which gets a C-plus-rating by Niche. Students can attend Eden Gardens Elementary School, which gets a C-plus-rating, followed by Anthony W. Ochoa Middle School, which gets a B-minus score. The B-rated Mt. Eden High School offers an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), which helps students with college prep by providing courses in study skills, organization and time management.Located next to main commuting and traveling thoroughfares
The neighborhood sits next to Route 92, leading to the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge that takes locals to the San Francisco Peninsula. This route also leads into Interstate 880, for traveling around the East Bay area. Another main thoroughfare for getting around the city of Hayward is Hesperian Boulevard, which sits to the east of the neighborhood. A few public bus stops are located along Hesperian Boulevard for traveling around the city via public transportation. The St. Rose Hospital is located southeast of the neighborhood, less than two miles away, while the Oakland International Airport is about 10 miles north.Innovative public park playscapes and shoreline adventure
Greenwood Park is the main park in the community, with modern, art-forward playscapes where kids can enjoy many hands-on, innovative play features. A massive grand tree sits at the center of the park, surrounded by well-shaded picnic tables for a spot to rest or enjoy an outdoor lunch. The park also features paved walking paths and basketball courts. The neighborhood is less than three miles from the Hayward Regional Shoreline, a spacious wetlands park boasting graveled shoreline trails for hiking and jogging. Mount Eden is also close to the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve, located south of the neighborhood across Route 92. This nature preserve features 6,400 acres of salt ponds and marshlands. It’s a popular spot for paddleboarding, kayaking and bird watching, as it’s home to turkey vultures, white-crowned sparrows and snow egrets. At Chabot College, residents can attend college sports games, including football and soccer, and can enjoy shows and concerts at the college’s Performing Arts Complex.Southland Mall and local eats along Hesperian Boulevard
Along Hesperian Boulevard, bordering the western side of the neighborhood, are many options for shopping and dining. While packed with fast food options, this main thoroughfare features more local dining, too, including Black Bear Diner. This neighborhood comfort staple offers classic American breakfast and lunch dishes in a welcoming diner-style setting. The popular Eon Coffee serves coffee made from house-roasted Arabica beans along with a healthy menu of wraps, salads and sandwiches. More elevated dining on the Boulevard is highlighted at Tomodachi, a common date night spot that serves innovative rolls, bento boxes and upscale cocktails. Nearby, Burger Road serves more than just classic burgers; it has other favorite menu items like breakfast burritos, while Los Pericos Taqueria on Southland Drive dishes out authentic Mexican cuisine. Less than a few miles west is the longstanding Southland Mall with big box stores like Macy’s. There are a few multicultural grocery options, including Seafood City Supermarket, specializing in Filipino and other Asian food items. There’s also a Foodmaxx located south across Route 92 for discount groceries.Chabot College events and downtown street parties
Along with enjoying sporting games and performances throughout the year at Chabot College, residents can participate in community events outside of the neighborhood in downtown Hayward. The Third Thursday Summer Street Party brings in the crowds for local food, live music, a beer and wine garden and a hot rod and classic cars show. Hayward’s Latin Jazz Festival has become a city favorite, with live jazz performances on multiple stages along the downtown streets. At Christmas, residents celebrate the holidays at Light Up the Season, a winter-themed Hayward lighting ceremony around the City Hall rotunda, followed by festive, family-friendly games and activities.
