North Hayward
Early 20th century homes, new apartments and condos
North Hayward’s tight city streets unfold with rows of eclectic, early 20th century style homes. Largely built out between the 1920s and the 1950s, there’s a wide array of California bungalows, ranch homes, Craftsman homes and Mediterranean Revival style builds on display. “These are not cookie cutter houses,” Hardy says. Lots sizes are typically on the smaller side, but there’s still plenty of room for landscaping, gardening and backyard parties. Well-maintained sidewalks, manicured front lawns and parallel parked cars are a common sight throughout the neighborhood. Home prices typically range from around $800,000 to $1.3 million depending on the home’s size, age and renovation status. Newer apartment buildings and condos can also be found here, including Mesa Verde, a gated condo complex with modern amenities like a community swimming pool.Diverse dining close to downtown
Much of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining are located along the community’s busiest streets: Mission Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard. Diverse culinary options are abundant: The Sister’s House dishes out Korean classics; Golden Safari serves authentic Nigerian fare; and La Piñata is a local chain known for its Mexican standards, outdoor patio and colorful décor. There’s a Safeway on Foothill Boulevard for groceries and everyday essentials, while specialty goods can be found at Las Montañas Supermarket. Downtown Hayward is just south of the neighborhood, a tiny town center filled with local businesses, restaurants, breweries and entertainment.Hayward’s Japanese Gardens
While there are no parks within North Hayward, it’s just a short walk or drive to Carlos Bee Park. This tree-covered green space is where residents can cool off in shady picnic areas while the kids romp around the playground. Peace and quiet is right around the corner at Hayward’s Japanese Gardens, a local favorite with koi ponds, a waterfall and trees and flowers that bloom spectacularly in the springtime. For a weekend activity, locals flock to Golden Tee Golfland, an amusement park with an elaborate mini golf course. There’s also City Sports Club within North Hayward for those in search of a gym membership.Students attend Hayward public schools
Cherryland Elementary School sits just across Western Boulevard, educating the youngest students in an inclusive, multicultural environment. The school earns a C-minus rating from Niche. Students move on to Bret Harte Middle School, rated C-plus, for grades 7 and 8. Hayward High School is one of the oldest schools in Northern California. It holds a B-minus and earns high state-wide rankings in diversity and athletics.Getting around the East Bay and beyond
North Hayward is conveniently located next to an on-ramp for Interstate 580 and Interstate 238, both heavily trafficked Bay Area commuter routes. Those who prefer to travel by rail have easy access to Downtown Hayward’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station; this regional metro service offers connections to Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose. Residents seeking medical care can head to St. Rose Hospital, a 153-bed community medical center that’s about 5 miles southwest of North Hayward.
