On the way from Kershaw to Lancaster
Sixty miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina, the small town of Heath Springs is bisected by Interstate 521 and the L&C railroad line. Home to fewer than 1,000 people, the area offers large plots of land and quiet rural living. “People often think of Heath Springs as a drive-through town on the way from Kershaw to Lancaster,” says Steve Myers, the owner of Heath Springs Pizzeria and a longtime resident. “I like to say that with just a little love, the town could be a backdrop for a Hallmark movie — it’s a quiet old place where people keep to themselves, and there’s nothing negative to say about anyone who lives here.”
Large lots with room to spread out
Homes in Heath Springs are situated on large lots, usually a half-acre or more. Two-bedroom bungalows and ranch-style homes range from $100,000 to $300,000, and farther from the town center, properties with 3 acres or more go for $300,000. Some houses date back to the early 1900s, but the area also offers new builds and empty lots ready for construction. A few main streets are lined with sidewalks, but in general, houses are situated on rural streets, separated from neighbors by wide lawns and mature trees.

From there, kids attend Andrew Jackson Middle School, which also celebrates the arts, offering field trips to galleries and performances in Charlotte, Washington D.C., and New York. And right next door, Andrew Jackson High School is the arts focus school of the Lancaster district, attracting kids from all over the county with advanced courses in fine arts, performing arts, and music. Normally an audition is required, but children living in Heath Springs can skip it. The high school is also known for its state championship-winning baseball team, as well as agriculture and auto mechanic programs. All three schools are rated B-minus by Niche.

Stop by the town's only restaurant
The main restaurant in Heath Springs is the Heath Springs Pizzeria. “I’m not in the pizza business to get rich,” says Steve Myers, the owner. “I do it to provide a staple restaurant in Heath Springs that people enjoy and want to come back to.” The dough and most of the sauces are made in-house, and the restaurant offers both take-out and dine-in. “I’m not one to toot my own horn, but people tell me that after eating my pizza, they are ruined for chain pizzerias forever,” Myers jokes. For making meals at home, the north of the town has a Dollar General, and 2 miles up toward Pleasant Hill, a Small’s Food Center is a larger grocery. For a wider selection of dining and shopping, locals head the 10 miles north to Lancaster, which has bigger stores like Walmart, Food Lion, and Ald

Modern turf soccer fields
The Heath Springs Athletic Complex was renovated in 2021 to include a collegiate-sized artificial turf field that hosts all the soccer matches in Lancaster County. The complex is surrounded by a picnic shelter, playground, and a walking track, and families can spend hours there thanks to the restrooms and concession stand. The nearby David McIsaac Park also offers a baseball field that is lit at night for evening play. When residents want to head further out into nature, the 40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve is a popular day trip 17 miles away. The large rock that draws visitors is really only 14 acres, but people can hike for miles on and around the rock. A bit closer to home, residents head to Hanging Rock Battleground to hike and fish with a historical backdrop.

Commuting to big cities
The workers of Heath Springs usually work from home or commute to larger cities. Lancaster is the nearest city 10 miles away, but for big-city amenities, residents have to head 60 miles north to Charlotte or the same distance south to Columbia. There is no public transportation available in the town, as the railroad no longer takes passengers. So the area is very car-dependent. For medical needs, Heath Springs Dental and Heath Springs Medical Center are located within the town limits, but residents have to leave town to reach larger hospitals, airports and events.
Events at the Heath Springs Depot
The historic Heath Springs Depot, which was built in 1903, sits next to the railroad tracks that run through the town. It can be rented out for community events like birthdays, family reunions and weddings. The depot gets decorated for holidays as well.
