Like a bird of prey high in the sky, people in Birdseye, a neighborhood on the west side of Helena, can see the city in the distance, and the Helena Valley all around them. “It's beautiful out here on this side of town,” says Tara Petersen, a Realtor with Mt Ranch and Home Real Estate and Birdseye resident. “You have the mountains in the distance, and a lot of the places have amazing views of the Helena Valley and the city. We have a crick running through our property.”

Big sky country
Helena is full of open space and public land. In fact the entire state of Montana has 30 million acres of state and federal land where people can fish, hunt, hike and camp. The people in Birdseye can utilize their own property for hiking, hunting, horseback riding and fishing, or people hop in the car and head to spots like Canyon Ferry Creek. “Canyon Ferry is one of the best lakes in the state,” says Petersen. “The fishing there is phenomenal.” Helena is also known for its trail system, especially around Mount Helena, which is about seven miles from Birdseye. “The trail system is matched to none,” says Anita Sherley, a Broker with Big Sky Brokers Real Estate.

Getting around Helena
A car or truck is the best way to get around Birdseye and into Helena proper, which is about 10 miles away. The nearest major roadway is Interstate 15, which is also next to the Helena Regional Airport, both about 10 miles away.
Capital Transit buses serve Helena and can be accessed via their app.
Getting around the Last Chance Gulch on the pedi bus is a fun activity.

The Lewis and Clark Fairground is the Helena hub for music, rodeo and other events. “Pro rodeos start May and June and they go until October,” says Petersen. “They’re all over the state.” The Last Chance Stampede and Fair thunders into Helena every year, turning the fairground into a swirl of live music, rodeo performances and antique cars.

Heading into town for a bite to eat
Birdseye residents may well get meat from hunting on their property or on public land, but for more supplies and spots to shop, people can head into Helena. Café Zydeco offers Louisiana-style po’ boys and jambalaya, and Vans Thriftway Food Store provides groceries. The Wassweiler is a fine dining spot along Montana State Route 12 that’s popular with area residents, according to Sherley.
Head to the Windbag Saloon for a drink and good eats.
Mt Ascension Brewing in Helena is a great choice for lunch or an evening with friends.
