Rural homes, New England College and shops on Maple Street
Home to New England College, large estates on rural lots and a downtown area off of Maple Street, Henniker is a small New Hampshire town about 18 miles west of Concord. With several outdoor parks, trails and the nearby Pats Peak Ski Area, Henniker is considered an outdoorsy neighborhood with luxury homes in the hills and a regional school system. Students spend kindergarten through eighth grade in the center of town near Azalea Park. Little country stores, diners and pizzerias sit on Maple Street in colorful, antique buildings. With a small-town feel yet plenty of room to grow, Henniker is one of several countryside towns west of the city.
Maple Street's local shops, essentials and eateries
Unlike Hopkinton to the east, Henniker has a few more local shops and restaurants in the center of town. "Country Spirit is a hometown favorite," says Susan Roemer, a Realtor with The Masiello Group, Better Homes and Gardens. "They feature local products like Blackwater mustards, maple syrup, and honey from nearby farms, which supports our local community." Where Maple Street and Western Avenue meet, there are shops, restaurants and boutiques in antique buildings with spandrel roofs and bright window dressings. Daniel’s Restaurant and Pub has deck seating that overlooks the Contoocook River. Abigail’s Bakery and Cafe serves sandwiches alongside its coffee and donuts. Sonny’s Main Street Restaurant and Western Ave Pizzeria both serve fresh pies, as well as steak subs and calzones. Whether it's a cone at Super Scoops ice cream shop or a quick stop at Henniker Pharmacy or New Life Thrift Shop, Henniker’s little downtown area has that classic small-town feel.
Hidden spots are farther outside of downtown, like Henniker Brewing Company. Roemer recently enjoyed the brewery's annual Oktoberfest, which featured food trucks, live music, and games. New Harvester Market sells groceries and household items, and Edmunds Ace Hardware sells tools and work supplies.

Modern rural homes and historic farmhouses in Henniker
Though many of Henniker’s homes are near the center of town and Franklin Pierce Highway, some residences are situated in the rural hillsides off slow backroads. Prices start between $300,000 and $500,000 for modest ranch-style homes and Cape Cods. There are also some farmhouses and Colonial revivals that date back to the 1970s and 1980s, with little gardens, decks and patios.
At the $500,000 to $750,000 price range, buyers are more likely to find larger Cape Cods, 1820s farmhouses and new traditional homes built after 2000. These homes have much larger lots with oversized garages and views of the mountains.

New England College's outdoorsy campus
"New England College is another draw," Roemer adds, pointing to the college’s role in bringing people to the area. The private, non-profit school is known for its relatively small size and multiple degree programs. With roughly 5,000 students per year, a campus of forested, natural areas, and access to Henniker’s downtown, New England College is a popular option for students who want a college experience without the big city or an overpopulated campus.
