The Waterfront from TNT to today
In a neighborhood that was once the headquarters of a dynamite manufacturer, The Waterfront has come a long way from its – quite literally – explosive past. Today, it stands as a stylish and contemporary Hercules neighborhood furnished with well-kept homes and local businesses. It’s also located 10 miles north of Berkeley and 25 miles from San Francisco, making it a benefit for commuters heading to the metropolitan Bay Area. And while the neighborhood – and the city of Hercules at large- continues to grow, remnants of its past iterations contribute to its character. For example, the remains of a historic pier at Hercules Point, the westernmost plot of land on the bay. In the 1940s, the tugboat Hercules docked here before setting sail to tow large battleships and cargo. The tugboat is no longer in operation and is now a historic landmark.

Colorful cottages and Victorians clustered near the San Pablo Bay
The neighborhood’s narrow streets are lined with tall pastel-colored cottages, Victorian-style homes and pillared bungalows. Prices range from $793,000 to $1.3 million, depending on how close the property sits to the bay. Of course, with this proximity to the water, views are more plentiful as well, making tri-level homes a particularly hot commodity. “Tri-level homes don’t seem to be popular choices in other areas, but here they sell like hotcakes,” says Lauren Lawson, a Realtor at Golden Gate Sotheby’s, who has sold homes here for several years. “You get the same gorgeous waterfront views as San Francisco for a much lower price, and I think people really enjoy that here. So much so that the homes closer to the waterfront have clear fences to enjoy an unobstructed view of the Bay.” Homes will typically sit on the market for about a month before selling. Plus, The Waterfront scores a 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index Crime Score, which is lower than the national average of 4.

The Hercules library and other community events
The city of Hercules hosts various seasonal festivities. “Hercules is a community that likes to celebrate and enjoy itself. We have things like our Easter Party, a Fourth of July celebration, Trunk or Treat at Halloween and a Christmas Tree Lighting. We celebrate things like Lunar New Year and MLK Day. We celebrate Unity Day when we all wear orange to promote kindness and anti-bullying. We also work with the Bayfront Chamber of Commerce and organize things like the Cultural Festival down at Refugio Park. The library, parks and rec and the city work well and collaborate together," says Alison Peters, the Hercules library manager, who has worked in the city for four years. The library itself offers a welcoming space with an interactive play area, outdoor gardens and quiet area.

Trails, trains and terrains across The Waterfront
Distinct from other cooler coastal regions, the warmer climate here is complemented by its beautiful parks. Families and joggers can often be seen at Frog Pad Park and Duck Pond Park, located side by side off Sycamore Avenue. There's also kayaking, paddleboarding and boat tours on the San Pablo Bay. Refugio Valley and Creek runs through the middle of town and hosts the Hercules Cultural Festival with global music, entertainment and food every June. The San Francisco Bay Trail winds through the Waterfront neighborhood, running parallel to the San Pablo Bay. This extensive path is great for hikers, skateboarders and cyclists and totals out to 350 miles long. Railroad Park’s small size creates a cozy green retreat where visitors can also watch the passing Amtrak cars speed along the tracks.
The ACE Train regularly passes by along the shore.

The shop also devotes a space to showcase merchandise from local businesses. Leila by the Bay serves Cali-style Mediterranean dishes. Two other favorites in the area are Tandoor Indian Cuisine, which is only 4 miles away, and Kinder's Meats Deli BBQ, located about a mile from home on San Pablo Avenue. Although nightlife in The Waterfront is limited, neighboring towns feature more venues and bars, with trips along CA-4 East and Interstate 680 South to Walnut Creek or I-80 West to San Francisco.
