A history of Hereford
Hereford Township has a long history; it was first inhabited by the Lenni-Lenapi Native Americans and then settled in the early 1700s by Germans and English fleeing religious persecution. As settlers spread across the rural Pennsylvania hills, it was Hereford's stretches of farmable land and rich iron deposits that encouraged people to stay. Today, the township remains a primarily agricultural community, home to a stable population of around 3,000. "It's a friendly, quiet place," says Louisa Masemore, the township's assistant secretary. "And we have a lot of older historic buildings that the board takes conscious efforts to preserve."
Small towns and historical living
The densest residential hub is Hereford town, which includes the mobile home park Herford Estates. Mobile homes go for just under $100,000, with rental options as well. But several small towns dot the Hereford hills, lined with houses built at the turn of the twentieth century. With stone siding and quaint front porches, living in town feels like stepping back in time, and properties start at $200,000 for quarter-acre lots. Farther out, stone homes built in the mid-1800s cost anywhere from $500,000 for 1 acre to $1.2 million for 100 acres. Featuring renovated interiors and private pools, these homes offer historical living with modern luxuries. For newer builds, mid-century ranch styles start at $300,000, and contemporary colonials start at $400,000. There aren't many sidewalks in Hereford, and some homes are situated back on private roads.

Schools with a path to success
Kids are part of the Upper Perkiomen School District and start at Hereford Elementary School, rated C-plus by Niche. The elementary school is walkable from homes in Hereford. After third grade, kids move on to Upper Perkiomen 4th and 5th Grade Center, rated B-minus, and Upper Perkiomen Middle, rated B. Finally, students can finish at Upper Perkiomen High, which picks up a B-minus. The high school has a Business/Computer department that prepares kids for their next steps in the modern age.
Upper Perkiomen Middle School serves 790 students in grades 6-8 in the Hereford community.
Upper Perkioman High School has a highly successful football and track program that Hereford students can partake in.

Community celebrations and parks
Up in the north of the township, Hereford Township Community Park offers a variety of sports courts and a volleyball sandpit. With a rental pavilion, this park is a popular spot for small community events. Located in the mobile home community, Treichler Park's basketball court just got redone to make it usable as a pickleball court. And in the south of the community, locals enjoy Tollgate Eco-Park's butterfly garden and creekside picnic tables. It's also a favorite fishing spot. "We host a fishing rodeo at Eco Park twice a year," Masemore says. "Those always have a pretty big turnout." For more community fun, the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company hosts seasonal events like Santa visits and summer barbecues. They are best known for their monthly hoagie sales. "The fire department does a lot for the community and the local elementary school- and their subs are really good," Masemore enthuses.

Savory Grill, located in the historic Seisholtzville Hotel, is a go-to spot for an upscale dinner. Make sure to call ahead because the romantic dining room fills up quickly. Poor Richards also makes its homes in a historic inn from the 1800s but has a more homey feel, with rustic American food and a lively bar. Tamato's Deli & Market is a local favorite for quick eats, and a Wawa in Hereford offers daily essentials. But for most grocery shopping, residents head into Pennsburg for a Walmart and Weis Markets.

Bear Creek Ski and Recreation Area is a popular winter skiing spot just north of Hereford. And Pennsburg, 6 miles south, borders the Green Lane Reservoir, which offers many miles of waterside hiking trails and fishing spots. Hereford is centrally located between the cities of Reading, Allentown and Quakertown, making it a popular place for commuting workers looking to come home to a quiet lifestyle. The 12-mile commute into Allentown typically takes half an hour, though traffic can make it longer. Allentown also offers shopping malls, hospitals and the Lehigh International Airport.
