A quiet hamlet surrounded by nature
Highland is a small hamlet in Ulster County tucked between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Hudson River. Its founding dates back to 1754, when Anthony Yelverton opened a ferry service that connected Highland across the river to Poughkeepsie. “Highland is a nice little area right off the Mid-Hudson Bridge,” says Isabel Alves, local Realtor with Re/Max Town & Country, who has 16 years of experience in the industry. “And it’s also a tourist destination because of The Walkway Over the Hudson.” The Walkway is the world’s longest pedestrian bridge that offers breathtaking river vistas of the Hudson. Apart from scenic strolls, this national park hosts events like summer music series and the Hudson Valley Marathon along the riverbanks. With a vibrant community and a buzzing little main street along Vineyard Avenue, Highland attracts residents looking for a small-town lifestyle surrounded by the great outdoors, but also just a train ride away from New York City.
Walking trails along the Hudson River
The Walkway Over the Hudson spans slightly over 1 mile and is just one small section of the 750-mile Empire State Trail system that runs through New York. The walkway stands 212 feet above the Hudson River. Visitors who overcome their fear of heights are greeted with scenic views of the Hudson River. To the east, the rooftops of Poughkeepsie stand out amongst a sea of trees. To the west, Highland’s rolling green hills that change with the seasons give way to large mountain peaks.
The trail merges with the Hudson Valley Rail trail, which passes by the Caboose Gallery, a tiny railroad car-turned-museum that dives into the history of the former railroad. “Highland hugs the Hudson River, so it’s a popular area for boat enthusiasts that want to purchase a home with river access,” Alves says. Other green spaces include riverside parks like Highland Landing, which offers picnic tables, a small fishing pier, and a ramp for kayakers and boaters.
Summer crowds can cool off at the reservoir at Berean Park. Swimming is permitted during the season when lifeguards are on duty. Along with a floating dock, a snack shack, a playground and sports courts, the park is also home to wooded paths that wind around Illinois Mountain Park. Farther south, more trails await at Franny Reese State Park, where rugged terrain offers riverside views for mountain bikers and hikers.

Events at the Ulster Walkway Welcome Center
Surrounded by farmland and rugged mountains, Highland is home to seasonal activities ranging from apple picking at Dubois Farms to wine tastings at nearby vineyards. Summer events include the Twilight Music in the Parks series, where local musicians perform every Tuesday and Thursday at Ulster’s Welcome Center by the Walkway. The center hosts events like movie screenings, Fourth of July fireworks, and more. During the summer. residents can enjoy a range of carnival rides, livestock competitions and live music at the Ulster County Fair, about 11 miles away. The fair has also recently introduced a sensory safe space booth, where attendees can grab a pair of noise-canceling headphones and special hours where rides are available without lights or music.
Ranch-style and contemporary homes
State parks and swaths of farmland border Highland, but most properties sit on compact residential streets, offering residents a mix of rural and suburban living. Properties range from condos and townhouses to split-level and ranch-style homes priced from the low $200,000s to upper $400,000s. Newer subdivisions give way to spacious New Traditionals priced from the $500,000s to the $700,000s, and Vineyard Avenue showcases historic Victorians, some of which need some TLC, in the same price range. Bellevue Road features a mix of modern, custom-built homes overlooking the Hudson River – a view that comes with prices ranging from $1 million to $4.6 million. Potential buyers need to be aware that properties bordering the Twaalfskill Creek are prone to flooding.

Local shops on Vineyard Avenue
Mom-and-pop shops are scattered along Vineyard Avenue. “Highland is a bit more rural than Poughkeepsie, but it’s busy enough where you don’t have to drive far for necessities,” Alves says. Underground Coffee & Ales’ specialty coffees and breakfast menu attract morning crowds. In the afternoon, their juicy burgers and 100-plus craft brews take center stage. Next door, Knaus Gallery & Wine Bar is a small art gallery with two permanent displays and a rotating monthly exhibit showcasing local artists. Besides a long list of reds, whites and rosé, Knaus also serves charcuterie plates and daily specials like Duck Trap Scottish Smoked Salmon. Down the street along Milton Avenue is Hudson Ale Works, Highland’s only small-batch craft brewery. Across the river, Avles notes that Shadows on the Hudson is one of the many favored restaurants in Poughkeepsie. Residents are also close to the Culinary Institute of America, which has three high-end restaurants serving French, Italian and American cuisine.
Vineyard Avenue’s barbershops, charming boutiques and artist studios attract locals and visitors. Lilly Rae in the Hamlet is a small gift shop that sells everything from handmade candles and soaps to customized gift baskets. Farther south along New York State Route 9W, Bridgeview Plaza features a Hannaford for weekly groceries and a Tractor Supply Co. About 9 miles away along State Route 9 are larger box stores like Target and the Poughkeepsie Galleria shopping mall.

5-mile drive to Poughkeepsie
Although this community is bike-friendly, many residents rely on personal vehicles. New York State Route 9 West is the main thoroughfare through town, and there is an Ulster County Area Transit bus stop in the neighborhood on Vineyard Avenue. Manhattan is about a 2.5-hour train ride from the nearby Poughkeepsie Train Station, and New York Stewart International Airport is about 30 miles south via Interstate 87. “You can take 9W straight down to Manhattan,” says Jose Santos, Realtor with K Fortuna Lighthouse Realty Inc., who has nearly a decade of experience. “So there are still many people commuting into the city.” Alves also notes that residents are also within commuting distance of Kingston, just 15 miles north. Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital is 5 miles away in Poughkeepsie, and First Care Walk-In Medical Center is 3 miles west along State Route 299.
