A town engulfed in nature
Apart from a small village with a general store, Hill is all mountain views and rural landscaping. “It’s a quiet bedroom town with a tight-knit community,” says Associate Broker Victoria Dickinson with Granite Group Realty Services, who has 12 years of experience in the area. Homebuyers that work in Concord but prefer living in the countryside choose Hill for its quiet atmosphere and 26-mile proximity to the city. Families also come here for Jennie D. Blake School, which earns Niche’s No. 1 ranking for best public elementary education in Merrimack County. From expansive state forests and waterfalls to sprawling residential lots, Hills exemplifies the classic pastoral New England town.

Hill recreation on land, water and snow
While Hill consists mostly of farmland and private properties, parks and recreation flourish in the area, as well. Of the town’s two state forests, William H. Thomas Jr. is the most popular. Forest visitors can hike through the greenery and along the small, scattered streams or opt to snowshoe in the winter. Hill falls right on the cusp of the Lakes Region, with Newfound Lake about 12 miles north and Lake Winnipesaukee about 45 miles down Route 140. For quicker access to a day on the water, the Pemigewasset and Smith rivers, along with some smaller ponds and brooks, flow through town. Profile Falls, part of the Franklin Falls Dam, has a recreation area with a canoe launch and a picnic spot. Visitors swim and fish, while others sit out on large rocks, listening to the roar of the waterfall. Folks that want to hit the slopes have 11-mile proximity to Ragged Mountain Resort, which offers seasonal passes and private lessons.

Small-town shopping and dining
Hill’s lack of commercial development means trips into Franklin and Bristol for shopping and dining. While the Hill Village Store has some everyday essentials and hot foods served from its small kitchen, bigger grocery runs take place at Hannaford, about 7 miles away. The nearest Walmart is about 13 miles away in Tilton, which also has The Home Depot and a Tanger Outlet mall. When folks want to take a break from cooking, taverns and pubs in Bristol, like LinCross Roast Beef and The Homestead are popular, along with the Asian Delight Thai spot in Franklin.

Large, private properties in Hill
With the exception of one small group of homes near the town center off Route 3A, residential lots often sit on numerous acres, tucked away from the country roads. Homebuyers will primarily find Cape Cods and ranchers, along with some log cabins and contemporary builds. Prices tend to fall between $300,000 and $500,000 for two-to-four bedrooms. The market consists of houses built as long ago as the early 19th century and as recently as 2023. Hill properties offer a sense of privacy and seclusion. In some cases, the only indication of a residence is a mailbox peeking out from under the towering trees at the top of a hidden driveway.

Coming together at the Hill Public Library
Despite Hill’s rural nature, the community remains interactive, especially through library events. The staff holds story times and various crafting classes for both children and adults, such as tie dying and knitting. On Tuesdays, locals can stop by the library for Dewey’s Coffee Café, a designated time slot for catching up with other residents over refreshments. A car-dependent town with no traffic
Route 3A serves as Hill’s major artery, flowing north to Bristol, about 6 miles away, and south toward Concord, about 26 miles away. Interstate 93 also runs nearby, providing a straight route into Boston, about 94 miles southeast. Without public transportation, Hill is heavily car dependent, though getting in and out of town is relatively seamless. “There is zero traffic here, and it’s so rural that there are no traffic lights,” Dickinson says. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport sits about 49 miles away and offers direct flights into major cities, like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
