Hill recreation on land, water and snow
While Hill consists mostly of farmland and private properties, parks and recreation flourish in the area, as well. Of the town’s two state forests, William H. Thomas Jr. is the most popular. Forest visitors can hike through the greenery and along the small, scattered streams or opt to snowshoe in the winter. Hill falls right on the cusp of the Lakes Region, with Newfound Lake about 12 miles north and Lake Winnipesaukee about 45 miles down Route 140. For quicker access to a day on the water, the Pemigewasset and Smith rivers, along with some smaller ponds and brooks, flow through town. Profile Falls, part of the Franklin Falls Dam, has a recreation area with a canoe launch and a picnic spot. Hill’s lack of commercial development means trips into Franklin and Bristol for shopping and dining. While the Hill Village Store has some everyday essentials and hot foods served from its small kitchen, bigger grocery runs take place at Hannaford, about 7 miles away. The nearest Walmart is about 13 miles away in Tilton, which also has The Home Depot and a Tanger Outlet mall. Kindergarten through sixth graders can attend Jennie D. Blake School (JBD), rated A-minus by Niche. Students can join the robotics team or participate in theater productions. A car-dependent town with no traffic
Route 3A serves as Hill’s major artery, flowing north to Bristol, about 6 miles away, and south toward Concord, about 26 miles away. Interstate 93 also runs nearby, providing a straight route into Boston, about 94 miles southeast. Without public transportation, Hill is heavily car dependent, though getting in and out of town is relatively seamless. “There is zero traffic here, and it’s so rural that there are no traffic lights,” Dickinson says. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport sits about 49 miles away and offers direct flights into major cities, like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
