On the Metra and Amtrak rail line, 25 miles southwest of Chicago, is the village of Homewood. “I have been in Homewood since seventh grade and have lived in three different places in the town,” says Ron Wexler, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty with over 40 years of real estate experience. “All the different places I’ve lived are within walking distance of each other.” Homewood is also known for its many parks and three country clubs, although only one is private.

The area is also host to Little League games. “It’s like in Field of Dreams, except cornfields do not surround you…it’s a forest-like setting,” Wexler says. Rover’s Run is the appropriate name for the dog park in Homewood. It’s a fenced-in three-acre park with a walking path and drinking fountains for humans and canines.

A Chicago pizza original
With nearly 40 locations around the county, most of them in the Chicago area, Homewood can claim the original Aurelio’s Pizza location. Although initially located on Ridge Road, Aurelio’s is now in the heart of downtown on Harwood Road. Aurelio’s specializes in Chicago-style thin-crust pizza that’s sliced in squares. “They’ve been a supporter of the Homewood community for a long time. They always sponsor Little League teams,” Wexler says. Another downtown favorite is Grady’s Snack N’ Dine, a retro diner with jukeboxes leather booth seats and breakfast, brunch and lunch comfort food. The downtown area is also a place to learn at Homewood Science Center. They’ve been open since 2016, offering free STEM programs for young children and families on Saturdays and hands-on activities every day.

There are plenty of chances to hit the links as Homewood is also a golfer’s haven. Ravisloe Country Club was established in 1901 and spans over 150 acres. It describes itself as a public course with a country club experience. It opened as a country club in the early 20th century but became a public course in 2009. Ravisloe is also a popular wedding venue. Calumet Country Club also opened in 1901 and has limited public play. The course has tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers. Idlewild County Club was built in 1908 and is a private, members-only course. In addition to the course, other amenities include two pickleball courts, a swimming pool and a driving range.

Wide variety of houses on neighborhood streets
Sidewalks lined with large trees front a variety of housing architecture in Homewood. One part of town has small brick cottages with bay windows or cottage-style homes with detached garages. Other styles include raised ranch, Tudor-influenced Cape Cod and split-level. Most homes were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, with a few from the ‘70s. Two phases of elementary school
Willow School is part of the Homewood School District Number 153, rated a B-plus on Niche. The school gets the same B-plus grade and teaches prekindergarten through second-grade students. From there, Winston Churchill School has a little over 600 students in grades three through five. This school receives a B overall grade. James Hart School serves as the middle school with a B-plus rating. Homewood-Flossmoor High School recently won the state high school boys' basketball championship. The school receives an A overall grade and has a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio.

Danish-influenced murals
Homewood has a collection of murals designed by Richard Haas from Denmark by way of Wisconsin. He began creating them in 1983 on the backs of businesses downtown. There are 15 in town, including a movie theater scene on the side of Melody Mart, a musical instrument store on Dixie Highway. There’s also a mural in tribute to Homewood on the side of the former Homewood Florist shop on Martin Avenue.
