Rural living and outdoor recreation just west of Concord
Home to the village of Contoocook and a few historical landmarks, Hopkinton is a somewhat rural town west of Concord with a mix of housing styles and a lot of land. "Hopkinton truly embodies quintessential New England charm," says Susan Roemer, a Realtor with The Masiello Group, Better Homes and Gardens. "The town boasts its own school system and is home to some beautiful, stately colonial homes along Main Street. It also features a state-of-the-art library and the popular Hopkinton Fairgrounds." Contoocook’s charming Main Street sits next to the oldest covered bridge in the United States. There are family farms and cideries tucked into the hills with views of Mount Kearsarge. In the autumn, families can head to pumpkin farms and apple orchards; in the winter, residents take to nearby ski resorts and cross-country ski trails.
A variety of New England homes in Hopkinton
Hopkinton consists mainly of rural roads and country estates near and around the village of Contoocook. Most homes that cost between $100,000 and $250,000 are manufactured residences set on rural acreage or located within small communities. Between $300,000 and $450,000, there is a collection of modest Cape Cods and split-levels with colonial features. These are often found in more compact neighborhoods with spacious backyards. From $500,000 to about $700,000, homebuyers can find larger historical or modern farmhouses with more generous acreage, long, winding driveways and large garages. These homes could be closer to town or in a more rural setting.
In the $750,000 to $900,000 range, there are larger estates with many bedrooms and over 4,000 square feet of living space. Some properties also include small ponds. Many of these estates are new traditional residences built after 2000, but some are 1980s mansions on wide acreage. There is also a small selection of homes here that reach over the $1 million mark. Some of these properties are waterfront, including over 40 acres of land or have hill-top views.

Local Hopkinton historic sites and attractions
Route 202, also known as Main Street and as Franklin Pierce Highway, is home to a couple of historic sites that offer a glimpse of Hopkinton’s past. The Hopkinton Historical Society is in the old Slusser Museum on Main Street. The Kimball Lake Historic Cabins sit on Kimball Pond and were refurbished by the city between 2014 and 2016. Scout troops are known to use the cabins, and locals like to walk the nearby trails, sit on the grassy lawn and fish in the pond. There is also a trail head for the Hopkinton Village Greenway trail nearby.
In the early 20th century, Lakehouse Tavern was named Horseshoe Tavern for the iconic mountain of rusty horseshoes stacked nearby. Over 100 years ago, local blacksmith Joseph Derry created the towering metal structure to bring luck to his business. The tower has since collapsed, but folks still stop for pictures. Lakehouse Tavern runs a tight ship on Kimball Pond, serving tasty pub fare and craft brews in the historic waterfront building.
Contoocook boutiques, family farm ice cream and hillside cideries
Up the road from Lakehouse Tavern is Barrel and Baskit, a small convenience store and deli. During summer and autumn, there are a few places to play and eat nearby. One of Roemer's favorite spots is the Contoocook Cider Company. "Located on Gould Hill across from the apple orchard, it offers live music, picnic tables, and stunning views of Mount Kearsarge. The setting is just incredible," Roemer adds. Beech Hill Farm and Ice Cream Barn has a country store gift shop, dozens of barnyard animals to feed or take pictures of, and annual corn mazes to explore. Beech Hill Farm also serves ice cream and sells pumpkins before Halloween. Locals can pick their own apples at Carter Hill Orchard before enjoying cider and donuts.
Up north in the village of Contoocook are little boutiques and shops like Witching Hour Provisions, which sells freshly roasted coffee and eco-friendly soaps and household cleaners. Maple Street Mercantile is a local coffee shop next to Rue Bakers Pet Supply store. The Everyday Cafe and Pub serves baked goods, breakfast burritos and salads. Longtime local staple Riverside Pizza sits right next to the Contoocook River next to the historic Contoocook Railroad Covered Bridge. Hopkinton locals can head about 9 miles east to Concord, which has a Market Basket, Hannaford and Shaw’s.

Indoor and outdoor recreation in Hopkinton
Kimball Pond Recreation Area has a small beach and hiking trails. Horse riders and hikers can spend a couple of hours beneath the forest canopy, while families can paddle around in the pond's shallows. Roemer also highlights the Hopkinton Village Greenway rail trail. "It's a great spot for a walk—it connects to several places and takes about two and a half hours to complete the full loop."
Robert A. Sweatt Preserve has a 1-mile trail that loops through untouched forest and over small footbridges built over clear brooks and streams. On the southeast side of Hopkinton is Duston Country Club, a 9-hole golf course and clubhouse. Hopkinton Town Library is next to the Hopkinton Parks and Recreation sports fields used for after-school and summertime leagues. Also on the property is a playground and a small dog park. Next door, the Slusser Senior Center offers indoor classes and programs for older residents who like to gather and connect throughout the year.

Hopkinton public school programs and achievements
Harold Martin School, for kindergarten through third grade students, scores a B-plus on Niche. Maple Street Elementary School, rated an A-minus, teaches fourth through sixth grade. Maple Street focuses on various academic programs and green initiatives, and its student “waste warriors” work to ensure that lunch leftovers are composted and used in the class gardens. For seventh through 12th grade, students attend Hopkinton Middle/High School. It has standalone teams for both boys' and girls' varsity sports, including lacrosse, for which it is well-known. The middle school portion grades an overall A-minus on Niche, and the high school scores a B-plus. Right next to the middle/high school is the Hopkinton Skate Park and the grounds for the Hopkinton State Fair.

Food, games, shows and auctions at Hopkinton State Fair
The Hopkinton State Fair is a major event in town that occurs every year during Labor Day weekend. Roemer further notes the town's vibrant community events. "The Labor Day Fair is a big draw, with people coming from all over. Plus, Hopkinton hosts events year-round, making it a exciting place to live." Famous for its livestock and agricultural displays, monster truck show, demolition derby and singing competitions, the fair also has games, auctions, food and exhibits. This massive event draws thousands of people every year just before the school year sets in.
Getting to nearby Concord and commutes south to Manchester
Hopkinton is about 9 miles west of Concord. Commuters can hop on Interstate 89 and reach the city in about 20 minutes. Those who live higher up in the hills or on rural backroads may experience longer commutes, especially in winter when ice and snow accumulate. To reach Manchester and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, drivers can take Interstate 89 to Interstate 93 for about 23 miles. During times of low traffic, Manchester is about 30 minutes away. Because Hopkinton is mainly rural, no bus lines run throughout the neighborhood, so most residents get around by car. The nearest medical center is Concord Hospital, about 8 miles east via Route 202.
