Houston’s cultural heartbeat, packed into 3 square miles

Admiring a sculpture garden, marveling at dinosaur skeletons or strolling through a larger-than-life model of the human body -- Museum Park is a community with no shortage of things to do. Located south of Midtown, the neighborhood – also known as The Museum District -- is named after its plethora of museums and is considered one of Houston’s cultural heartbeats. In addition to 20 museums, the easily walkable community is filled with tree-lined streets, unique restaurants and one of Houston’s most famous parks. It is also only a short train ride or drive away from some of the city’s largest college campuses and major industries. “People really enjoy living here because it’s just so close to everything they want,” says Carol Barndollar, Realtor with Greenwood King Properties. “The convenience of the METRORail, the proximity to all the museums and restaurants and the walkability typically attract all kinds of residents from university students to young professionals to older adults enjoying retirement.”

A century’s worth of museums and attractions

The Museum of Fine Arts first opened in 1924, and over a dozen more museums trickled into the same 3-square-mile area within the next five decades. The Houston Museum District Association was officially formed in 1997 with representatives from the neighborhood’s 20 largest cultural institutions, and the association worked to establish the area as a pedestrian-friendly cultural hub. Almost a half-century later, Museum Park attracts millions of visitors every year. “The museums appeal to a certain cerebral clientele who really appreciate them,” says David Atkins, Real Estate Advisor with Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty. The Museum of Fine Arts on Bissonnet Street, The Houston Children’s Museum on Binz Street and The Health Museum on Hermann Drive are just a few of the district’s most popular attractions. The Houston Museum District Association also includes the Rothko Chapel on Yupon Street, which is part sculpture display and part sanctuary for people of all faiths.

A new spin on Southern cuisine at Lucille’s

A day in Museum Park wouldn’t be complete without lunch or dinner at one of the area’s signature restaurants. Lucille’s on La Branch Street is a local favorite for its “elevated” Southern cuisine, like oxtail omelets and steak with shiitake gravy. Barnaby’s Café is a Houston staple with its huge salads and Tex-Mex entrees, and the Museum Park location on Binz Street is also known for its burgers and fondue-covered waffle fries. Turkey Leg Hut on Almeda Road is another southern eatery serving up its signature, fall-off-the-bone stuffed turkey legs. For groceries, the local H-E-B on South Freeway is one of the few big box stores around the Museum Park area. Roy’s Farm Stand, a locally owned farmer’s market on the University of St. Thomas campus, opens every Saturday. A 3-mile drive brings residents to Rice Village, a popular boutique shopping district next to the Rice University campus.

More museums await in Hermann Park

At 445 acres, Hermann Park on Fannin Street is one of Houston’s largest public parks. The over 100-year-old park offers a full golf course, a beloved Japanese Garden, and The Miller Outdoor Theatre, an outdoor venue that hosts free dance, music and theatre shows. Hermann Park is also home to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo, which are both part of the Museum District Association. For smaller green spaces, Bell Park on Montrose Boulevard is just over an acre and has a water feature with bridges and a waterfall, and Peggy Park on Almeda Road has a playground and covered picnic tables.

High-rise condos and Postmodern Museum Park mansions

Condos and townhomes on busy streets are some of the most popular home choices in this packed urban neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to dozens of modern townhouses ranging from $350,000 to $750,000. Condos are typically between $150,000 to $400,000 for a 2-bedroom unit, but high-rise units in luxury buildings like the Warwick Towers can be $800,000 to $1.5 million. The neighborhood still has many stand-alone homes with a wide range of aesthetics that fit with Museum Park’s creative spirit. Stately Colonial Revivals, experimental International and Postmodern-style homes, and classic Mediterranean and Italianate properties can all be found in Museum Park. Most single-family homes sell for $350,000 to $750,000, but properties over 4,000 square feet can be between $900,000 and $4 million. Stand-alone homes are often surrounded by large gardens, elaborately decorated patios and wrought iron fences. Museum Park has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5, slightly above the national average score of 4.

Named one of Houston’s most walkable neighborhoods

Houston’s METRORail system has stops throughout the neighborhood, including at the community’s many museums. Walk Score also named the Museum District is the fifth most walkable neighborhood in Houston, and the Museum District Association provides online walking maps for the best routes to get between museums and attractions. Interstate 69, Interstate 45 and South Freeway are all easily accessible and lead to some of the cities’ major employment centers. The Medical Center is 2 miles away, downtown Houston is 3 miles away and the Energy Corridor is 20 miles. “It’s ideal because most people working there are in something medical or oil and gas related, so you’re an equal distance from medical and downtown,” Atkins says. William P. Hobby Airport is also 11 miles from Museum Park.
