Westwood

A diverse dining scene in Westwood
Westwood’s many restaurants testify to the area’s cultural diversity, with highly rated favorites like Safari Restaurant and Afrikiko serving West African fare. Filipiniana Restaurant offers Filipino dishes, while Kim Café dishes out Chinese cuisine daily. Ojos Locos Sports Cantina is just outside of the neighborhood’s eastern boundary and provides drinks, tasty food, and a great space to watch sports games with neighbors. Bissonet Beltway Plaza offers everything from a food mart to beauty service shops and other convenient retail options. Brenda's Taqueria is also in the plaza, where diners visit for Mexican staples like fresh chips and salsa.
Cultural festivals and Houston Funplex
Several of Westwood’s local events include cultural celebrations, further reflecting the area’s diversity. Lunar New Year Houston takes place just outside of Westwood’s western border, a nod to the heritage of Houston’s Asian American community featuring dance performances, food and drinks. Houston’s Asian Night Market is another diverse festival that occurs in March and May and includes a wide range of authentic Asian dishes. The area provides Houston Asiatown tours, where people can learn more about the country’s culture and traditions at the Teo Chew Temple. For weekend adventure, people can visit Houston Funplex, an amusement center that includes a bowling alley, go-karting and arcade games. More fun can be found downtown, where bars and nightclubs like Molly's Pub and Interio Houston sit along Main Street.Waiting for the bus in Westwood
Westwood’s convenient access to Texas State Highway Beltway 8 and Interstate 69 puts several major employers, like the Texas Medical Center, within easy reach of Westwood residents. Interstate 69 is lined with car dealerships, making them some of the most prominent businesses in Westwood. Commuters visit the several bus stops along Wilcrest Drive and Bissonnet Street. William P. Hobby Airport is 24 miles away.Bungalows with manicured lawns
Westwood’s housing options mostly consist of apartments, condos and one-story homes. Though Westwood has a fairly small geographic footprint, the neighborhood’s housing is quite dense. Traditional-style condos range from $75,000 to $150,000. Bungalows and traditional homes range from $200,000 to $350,000. A majority of single-family homes have manicured lawns but lack sidewalks, leading directly to the road. Most of the housing dates back to when Westwood was originally developed in the 1970s and early 1980s. Some remain close to their original condition, but many properties have been improved or restored. “Prices are increasing because homes are being modernized with new features like pools and patios,” Cabrera says.Relaxing at Bray’s Bayou
Club Creek Park is a part of Bray’s Bayou Greenway and sits along the banks, just across the way from Westwood Golf Club. The park has sports fields and a multi-use facility. It also connects to the Club Creek Detention Basin, which is designed to help prevent flooding in the area. The Westwood Golf Club was founded in 1928 and is host to several championships over the years, such as the 2021 Texas State Senior Amateur. Marian Park Community Center is where residents go for indoor recreation and sports, just a few miles south of Westwood.Field days at Harmony School of Explorations
Westwood is primarily served by Alief Independent School District and the Harmony Public Schools system, a state-wide public charter school network focused on the STEM fields, or science, technology, engineering and math. Through the Harmony District pipeline, kids attend Harmony School of Exploration, which earns a B from Niche. Children can move on to Harmony School of Innovation, which hosts fun, engaging events like a field day and formal dinners. The school receives a B-plus. Harmony Science Academy Houston earns an A-minus from Niche and has an optional after-school program that emphasizes leadership skills. While there aren’t many private school options in Westwood, Houston Christian University is a popular college nearby. People have religious gatherings and host community events at churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God and True Buddha Society of Houston.
