Split-levels homes with large lots start around $600,000
Midcentury split-level homes pop up everywhere in Candlewood, many with tan vinyl siding on top and a red brick lower level. But just as appealing to homebuyers are the lots, which can be more than a third of an acre and decked out with mature trees and a driveway. These can start at $600,000 for four bedrooms, which isn’t far off from the neighborhood’s median price of $611,000. But with larger six-bedroom versions available, the cost can increase to $875,000 – especially after renovations, which may include a finished basement.Other bi-level styles appear here, too. Side-hall colonials will go for $850,000 to $920,000. This type of colonial home is immediately recognized by its offset front door, framed by white columns.
Indoor and outdoor options for staying active
The Windmill Club is a private recreational community that homebuyers can join. Basketball, tennis and swimming are part of the package, but nature enthusiasts also have access to a walking path and lake views. For those who want to exercise indoors, Retro Fitness is walking distance from homes on the west side. Winston Park is a public space, also on the west side, where visitors can use a basketball court, baseball field and playground. Manasquan Reservoir to the north is an ideal spot for devoted hikers, and Allaire State Park to the east has a living history museum dedicated to the former ironworks site.Specialty arts at Howell High
Students can start at Taunton Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, for prekindergarten through second grade. Aldrich School teaches third through fifth grade and also earns a B. Howell Township Middle School South earns a B as well. Howell High offers a chance to specialize in a four-year course of study, through its Fine Arts and Performing Center. The school receives an A-minus.Interstate 195 appeals to commuters
While immediate access to Route 9 is convenient for traveling around Howell and running errands, it’s the intersection with Interstate 195 that bolsters Candlewood’s appeal. Commuters can use the interstate to travel the 30 miles to Trenton, or quickly make their way to the Garden State Parkway, and complete the 70-mile journey to New York City in about 90 minutes. Residents can also pick up the 139 bus on Route 9 and be dropped off at the Port Authority in Manhattan, which also takes about 90 minutes. Trenton Mercer Airport is about 40 miles away and Newark Liberty International Airport is about 55 miles away.Route 9 is walking distance from west side residences
Route 9 offers plenty of food and shopping. It’s a few steps away from some residences, but most will want to explore this retail strip by car. Aldrich Plaza is the shopping center that comes the closest to residential streets. It contains a fitness center, plus a couple of small eateries. Nathan’s Big City Bagels has an extensive menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and will also sell deli meat by the pound. Shop Rite is a convenient stop for groceries, and CVS is close to Aldrich Plaza as well. For those who want to continue patronizing local establishments, Juanito’s is across from the plaza and serves Mexican classics like burritos and guacamole.
