Candlewood attracts commuters who work in NYC with shopping, dining and recreation
Candlewood is one of the most sought-after areas in New Jersey's Howell Township because it blends a calm, leafy landscape with direct access to the township’s best retail amenities. The neighborhood doesn’t merge with the more rural stretches out east, like Salem Hill does next door. But it’s still close to outdoor spots like Allaire State Park, offsetting the traffic that can appear along U.S. Route 9 on the west end. “I would describe Candlewood as a mix of various residential developments,” says Louisa Sagarese, a Realtor with Re/Max Revolution. This is a commuter community of New York City, which is about 70 miles away, so entertainment venues in the immediate vicinity can be hard to come by. But as long as residents have a car, outdoor recreation is theirs to explore. “The whole Monmouth County park system is amazing,” says Allie Farinhas, a Realtor with Re/Max Innovation. Plus, the lifestyle element often does come down to where residents like to shop and eat. “You can pursue a variety of lifestyles here easily,” says Farinhas. “Are you vegan? Are you someone who likes to walk around a farmers market? You can find that in Howell.”

Split-levels homes with large lots start around $600,000
Midcentury split-level homes pop up everywhere in Candlewood, many with tan vinyl siding on top and a red brick lower level. But just as appealing to homebuyers are the lots, which can be more than a third of an acre and decked out with mature trees and a driveway. These can start at $600,000 for four bedrooms, which isn’t far off from the neighborhood’s median price of $611,000. But with larger six-bedroom versions available, the cost can increase to $875,000 – especially after renovations, which may include a finished basement. Other bi-level styles appear here, too. Side-hall colonials will go for $850,000 to $920,000. This type of colonial home is immediately recognized by its offset front door, framed by white columns.
