Outdoor recreation in commuter-friendly Salem Hill

Salem Hill, in New Jersey's Howell Township, stretches from the Manasquan Reservoir down to Echo Lake Park. But it’s not just bordered by outdoor recreation spots. This neighborhood is equally defined by transportation routes. The commuter-friendly Interstate 195 runs along the north side. Oak Glen Road is to the east, separating a winding mass of residential streets from the open rural swaths of Howell. “Properties along Oak Glen Road are often on a septic system,” says Viviana Mejia, a Realtor with Keller Williams, underscoring how countryside elements blend in at the edges. Iron production is part of Salem Hill’s backstory. Allaire State Park, near the neighborhood’s east end, has restored 19th-century ironworks. “Allaire State Park is a community gathering spot,” says Allie Farinhas, a Realtor with Re/Max. “I have good memories from holidays there.” With rugged terrain nearby, this commuter community about 60 miles from New York City isn’t as modernized as nearby Southard, which has retail-heavy U.S. Route 9 running through it.

Colonial homes, traditional to modern, from $700,000

With street names like Cherry Bend Drive and Honeysuckle Way, this neighborhood leans into its naturalistic settings. But strolling the sidewalks past driveways and neatly decorated lawns, it’s clear this is largely a quiet, classic suburban area. While ranch-style homes are mixed in, most homes in Salem Hill are bi-level and range from $600,000 to $750,000. Salem Hill is more known for its colonial homes, but there’s variation within that genre. Many times, the home will be a traditional, boxy colonial that focuses on symmetry. Other times, the front door will be offset, for what’s called a side-hall colonial. Finally, some homes have colonial influences only here and there, like on the steeply gabled roofs of a modern traditional home. Prices range from $700,000 to $1 million.

Allaire State Park has a living history museum

Allaire State Park offers plenty of trails, but it also invites visitors to explore Allaire Village, a living history museum. There’s passive recreation with picnic facilities and grills, plus playground equipment. Waterside fun is available, too. It’s possible to canoe on the Manasquan River, and fishing is always an option, but a license is necessary. For a meditative jaunt, hikers can go to Manasquan Reservoir and take the 5-mile loop trail. There are other trails here, but this is the most popular. Plus, the seaside destination of Asbury Park is only 15 miles farther east. “The Jersey Shore is great,” says Farinhas. “You can go to the boardwalk at Asbury Park. This is the kind of place where you can surf and ski in the same day. Go surfing at Belmar just 20 minutes away, then head up to the Poconos.”

American classics at the Ivy League Bar & Grill

When it comes to shopping and dining, residents head west to Route 9. This retail-packed corridor includes Shop Rite, Walgreens and Target. There are plenty of fast-food eateries and fast-casual restaurants, too, ranging from McDonald’s to Five Guys. But there are more intimate, locally owned establishments as well. The Ivy League Bar & Grill is a wood-paneled watering hole serving American classics alongside a helping of sports. The Caffeine Haven is a snug spot to connect with neighbors while grabbing coffee. Stewart’s Root Beer aims to quench thirst with frosty mugs of soda, all from a bright orange diner.

Oak Glen Road helps with local travel, while Interstate 195 serves commuters

As much as Route 9 is important for retail, it’s also the key path for commuters, as it leads directly to Interstate 195. Everything else in Southard is a residential street or a moderately larger thoroughfare that these streets feed into, like Lanes Mill Road. There are buses that run on Route 9, but many will take the 139 to the Port Authority in Manhattan. “We are a corridor, and people will commute to New York City,” says Farinhas. It’s about a 90-minute drive to cover the 70-mile trek.
