Fresh air and open fields in Oregon Ridge
In Oregon Ridge, 20 miles north of downtown Baltimore, life is about more than enjoying the view; it’s about preserving it for generations to come. “Baltimore County, from that point further north, has more contiguous acres of conserved land than anywhere on the eastern seaboard of the United States of America,” says Karen Hubble Bisbee, a top associate broker in the area and principal of Hubble Bisbee Christie’s International Real Estate. She says the land’s preservation “is due in part to various conservancies and extraordinary contributions of many individuals who have really stepped up their energy and personal wealth to ensure that there will never be overdevelopment of that beautiful, pristine, rolling countryside.” While locals can enjoy forests, pastures and seclusion from city life, commercial amenities are within no more than a few miles. The neighborhood also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Oregon Ridge has a gorgeous home for everyone.

Horses, honey harvests and hiking
Miles of trails and nature programs await at Oregon Ridge Park. Once a site for mining iron ore and marble, the park’s nature center now offers environmental lessons and educational activities for the next generation of conservationists. The center also offers a nature book club, summer camps and the annual Honey Harvest Festival, where participants can learn about native pollinators and navigate the hay maze. A drive through the neighborhood will reveal many horse crossing signs, and equestrians often ride on local farms and private pastures. “It’s an incredible area for horse enthusiasts, where you can literally ride for miles and miles and miles,” Hubble Bisbee says. For those who would rather spectate, the Legacy Chase horse race takes place at Shawan Downs each fall. Golf and tennis players can join Hayfields Country Club, which also hosts private events and has a swimming pool.

Hitting Hunt Valley Towne Centre and local restaurants
Despite Oregon Ridge’s rural layout, shopping and dining options are within about 6 miles of most residences, with the Hunt Valley Towne Centre nearby off Shawan Road. The mall features over 55 storefronts, such as Lands’ End and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as over 20 restaurants, including both local sit-down spots and international chains. The mall also has a massive Wegmans, and Giant Food is available across the street at Shawan Plaza. When looking for seasonal produce like strawberries and zucchini, shoppers can visit Misty Valley Farms, steps from the Shawan Downs racecourse. Though most restaurants are near the area’s busiest thoroughfares, a few dining options can be found amidst the rural landscape. The Oregon Grille steak and seafood house sits right outside of Oregon Ridge Park, and The Butler Cabin sports bar hosts game-day viewing parties, accompanied by typical pub fare.

A wide range of home prices, sizes and styles in Oregon Ridge
From small ranch styles to multimillion-dollar estates atop acres of farmland, Oregan Ridge offers plenty of housing variety. No matter the architecture, each home sits on carefully preserved land. Three-bedroom ranch styles and modest farmhouses often sell between $450,000 and $650,000. The largest properties can span dozens of acres, with price tags from $1.5 million to over $7 million. These homes often have modern or colonial architectural influences with ornate detailing. Residences may include pools, guest houses or stables, with enough indoor space for large home theaters, full bars and game rooms. Stone animal statues often guard the front steps and overlook the bush-lined driveways, while real livestock and horses may graze the extensive back yards. Because of the rural layout of Oregon Ridge, roads have no sidewalks, and many residents have to drive to reach a neighbor’s house.

A variety of public and private schools near Oregon Ridge
Because Oregon Ridge spans many miles, students may be zoned for different schools within Baltimore County’s district. Most students can attend Mays Chapel Elementary, which earns an A-minus on Niche, before transitioning to B-rated Cockeysville Middle. Kids can then head to Dulaney High, an A-rated school with a replacement building in the works. Students at Dulaney can take Advanced Placement courses and choose from over 40 after-school activities, including Programming Club, Model United Nations and Jazz Band. Families that opt for private education can send fifth through 12th graders to A-plus-rated St. Paul’s School, which has separate campuses for boys and girls.
Dulaney High School has a student to teacher ratio of 17 to 1.
Mays Chapel Elementary is home to the Labradors and was built in 2014 to house 700 students.
Cockeysville Middle School was last renovated in 2007.

Transportation options and access to health care
While the city may seem far away, Hunt Valley has the northernmost Light RailLink stop, which leads all the way south to BWI International Airport, about 30 miles away. Drivers have plenty of options, as well. “It’s right off Interstate 83 and just a hop, skip and jump to the confluence of 83 and 695,” Hubble Bisbee says. The closest hospitals are accessible via I-83, with Greater Baltimore Medical Center, about 9 miles away, and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, around 19 miles away. Many residents work in health care, and the commute to downtown hospitals, like Johns Hopkins, typically takes under 30 minutes.
