Pastoral homes in the hills of Western Massachusetts
Deep in the rolling forested hills of Western Massachusetts, the Huntington region is centered on the village of Huntington. “It’s a little bit of a bedroom community, folks can still commute to Westfield or Springfield or Northampton within 25-30 minutes,” says James Adams, Broker at Hilltown Real Estate by Adams Realty for 30 years, “and it’s much more affordable than if you went closer to some of the larger cities, it’s ten to fifteen percent cheaper for the same type of property.” While the village offers the bare necessities, the main thoroughfare gives residents a direct line to Westfield and Springfield, with their commercial and financial sectors – the latter is home to the headquarters of MassMutual, a major employer in the region. At the same time, the bucolic setting makes it popular for residents who want to enjoy the outdoors and take a hike after work, with thousands of acres of public land and open lakes to explore and enjoy.
Charming New England Colonials and farmhouses
While the village of Huntington brings together a collection of homes, everything from vinyl-sided raised ranch homes to 1800s farmhouses with wooden front porches, to Colonial two-family homes and modern split levels can be found sprinkled through the countryside. “There are smaller properties in town – you’re talking a quarter of an acre,” says Adams, “but outside of town you’re looking at larger properties, anywhere from one to 100 acres.” Many of these homes were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, however building of new homes continues as parcels of land get developed. Most homes feature three or more bedrooms, and outside of the village they often sit on multiple acres of land. Older homes often sell in the $200,000 to $300,000 range, while newer homes and older homes that have undergone renovations sell in the $300,000 to $400,000 range.

Forests and lakes for hours of solitude
“There’s a lot of hiking north of Huntington, from the reservoir all the way up to Chesterfield Gorge,” points out Adams. Quiet outdoors and the ability to wander the wilderness for hours without seeing another person is one of the big draws of Huntington. The Knightville Dam Wildlife Management and Recreation Area sprawls along north Huntington, with a total of 2,340 acres that includes the Knightville Reservoir, and offers picnic spots as well hiking, fishing and hunting opportunities. To the east, idyllic Huntington State Forest features dense woodlands and calm streams that are home to the flora and fauna of Western Massachusetts. Norwich Pond is home to swimmers and boaters and is stocked annually with trout for fishing.
The CM Gardner State Park is open to the public almost always.

In the heart of Huntington Village, Comfort Kitchen & Bar serves hearty classics like chicken pot pie, old-fashioned beef pot roast and smothered fries, along with regular specials. Moltenbrey’s Market and B&D Variety both provide a selection of groceries as well as other necessities, and Gateway Farm and Pet offers a wealth of homestead needs, from the garden to the pool. For greater selection residents make the drive to Westfield where they can knock out shopping along U.S. Route 20 with big box and national retailers including Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, Aldi, Price Rite. This stretch also features national chain restaurants for a quick bite.

Gateway offers individualized attention
Huntington is served by the Gateway Regional School District, which covers seven towns across the region. Students have a short trip to school though, as all schools are located on the same campus. Littleville Elementary School, which houses kindergarten through fifth grade, gets a grade of C from Niche. Gateway Regional Middle School encompasses grades seven and eight and gets a C-plus grade from Niche. With a B-minus grade from Niche, Gateway Regional High School also has a 7-to-1 student to teacher ratio, allowing for more individualized attention.
A vehicle is a necessity
Huntington residents are extremely car-dependent, with no public transport to speak of and roads that are bikeable only for the strong of heart. Route 20 runs across the bottom of town and takes residents into Westfield, where Westfield Barnes Regional Airport offers connecting flights to larger airports. The other option is to drive to Bradley International, a 30-mile drive south. Westfield is also the nearest location for emergency care, with the Baystate Noble Hospital being roughly 10 miles from the village of Huntington.
Tackle the rapids
Huntington is the location of the Westfield River Wildwater Races, the country’s oldest continuously run whitewater kayak and canoe races. “Every spring, we used to get 20,000, sometimes up to 50,000 people at the height of the canoe races,” says Adams, “Even now we still get probably 10,000.” While experts start north of town at Knightville Dam, the Classic Start is right in the village – this is also the location of the recently-added 1-mile fun run. Afterward, live music, awards, and food trucks are found at the race celebration downstream in Strathmore Park.
