A Huntsville neighborhood surrounded by nature
At the top of north Huntsville’s Wade Mountain sits the Devil’s Race Track, a looping trail marked by an outcropping of limestone. According to local legend, the trail is where the Cherokee tribe held competitive horseraces. Today, there is no horseracing on the mountain, but the trail still serves as a panoramic view of the area; even Tennessee is visible on particularly clear days. Looking south from the trail will reveal the residential section of Meadow Hills, the Huntsville neighborhood in the mountain’s shadow. Shrouded in nature, the neighborhood is quiet and close to downtown Huntsville’s shops and restaurants. “It’s about affordability and location,” says Hollisha Green-Shannon, a broker with Cole Properties, Inc. “It’s great for families and investors.”
Ranch-style and Craftsman homes are prevalent
Towering oak trees envelop many of the neighborhood’s streets, and Wade Mountain can be seen in the distance. Most neighborhood roads do not have sidewalks, but wide streets keep the community walkable. A mix of architectural styles means homeowners are likely to find something that suits them. Ranch-style and split-level homes usually range from $140,000 to $340,000, and Craftsman/New Traditional homes typically range from $210,000 to $520,000. There are also investment properties available, usually from $100,000 to $160,000.
Mae Jemison High helps students earn college credit
Students are served by Huntsville City Schools. Students can attend Rolling Hills Elementary, Ronald E. McNair Junior High School and Mae Jemison High School, which offers a College Academy General Magnet program that allows participants to earn 30-60 hours of college credit. All three schools earned a C grade from Niche. Alabama A&M University sits across Memorial Parkway to the southeast.
Wade Mountain Nature Preserve centers the neighborhood
The 935-acre Wade Mountain Nature Preserve has three trailheads and 14 trails to explore on bike or on foot, about 12 miles in total. And though horseracing is no longer held at Devil’s Race Track, equestrian trail riding is still allowed, making it the only Land Trust of North Alabama preserve with that option. The Johnson Legacy Center and Legacy Park offer rock climbing, volleyball and futsal, or indoor soccer. The Colonial Golf Club is a par 72 course with an open layout and scenic views. Nearby Maplewood Park has a secluded playground and basketball court. The nearby North Huntsville Public Library's campus has a playground and pickleball courts, and the library itself has book clubs for kids to join.
Floyd's Barbeque serves up a summer cookout
Kroger and IGA are grocery store options. Floyd’s Barbeque is a drive-thru and carry out restaurant that serves food reminiscent of a summer cookout. Situated in an Exxon station, Gerry’s Country Kitchen & Deli makes a name for itself with large catfish filets and other soul food dishes. A Bojangles can fill cravings for fried chicken. Lakewood Shopping Center is the home of chains like Wings to Go, Subway and Burger King. In downtown Huntsville, Parkway Place mall has retail stores like Belk, Finish Line and Forever 21.
Louis Crews Stadium gets full on gameday
Nearby Louis Crews Stadium is the home of Alabama A&M University football games. The stadium has a capacity of 21,000, making it the 10th-largest stadium in the state. The stadium also hosts concerts and other events.
Convenient access to Huntsville Hospital
The neighborhood is bordered by Memorial Parkway, which takes drivers south to downtown Huntsville — 6 miles away — or north to Tennessee. Huntsville Hospital is approximately 8 miles from the community. Huntsville International Airport is about 18 miles southwest via Memorial Parkway and I-565.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
