After World War II, Northern Virginia quickly developed into a network of accessible suburbs for veterans and workers in Washington, D.C. Idylwood's curb appeal still reflects the Baby Boom era, and many of the original homes from the 1950s are currently on the market. The neighborhood's desirability increased as Tysons Corner Center, the largest mall in the D.C. area, opened its doors less than a mile away in the late '60s. It was not only an appealing suburb for folks who needed to commute to D.C. but also for people who wanted to be close to the region's most popular shopping and dining hub. Today, Idylwood residents benefit from all of this convenience; they're minutes from Tysons Corner, bordered on all sides by major roads to make D.C. commutes simple. And they enjoy the more modern appeal of being close to numerous Fairfax County parks and trails for jogging and hiking.

Locals browse Tysons Corner and the Mosaic District
Locals can hop on Leesburg Pike for a five-minute drive to Tysons Corner, which features over 300 brand-name stores and restaurants. There's Old Navy, Gap and Bloomingdale's to browse for clothes, and dine-in eateries like Coastal Flats and T.G.I. Friday's. On the top floor is the food court, which features fast-casual spots like Five Guys, Taste of India and Grill Kabob for Mediterranean takeout. For those who don't want to leave the neighborhood, Idylwood Plaza is a small strip beside Leesburg Pike, with a Whole Foods for groceries, regional chain Taco Bamba, and Thaison's Thai street food. Their menu includes panang curry, cashew chicken and ka pow noodles at different spiciness levels. The Mosaic District is a newer mixed-use development in Merrifield, just 3 miles south. It's become a popular destination for its variety of retailers and restaurants. Folks can catch a movie at Angelika Film Center, get tacos and margaritas at Urbano, or shop at Pottery Barn or Target. Organizers at Mosaic will also close off Strawberry Lane every now and then to host yoga events, live concerts or farmers markets. Occasionally, the massive screen outside Angelika Film Center will stream live sports or classic movies for crowds on the nearby turf grass. Just 2 miles east is the city of Falls Church, which Rachel Van Zanten, a Realtor with Smith & Schnider LLC, describes as "a cool, laid-back downtown area [with] a lot of mom-and-pop restaurants." Idylwood residents can walk or bike along Washington & Old Dominion Trail to reach local spots like Lazy Mike's Deli for sandwiches or ice cream.

Midcentury homes, with condo and townhouses available
Idylwood's home values range from $300,000 to $1.9 million, varying by home size and remodel status. Idylwood has a diverse range of housing styles, and buyers can find two-bedroom condos from $300,000 to $750,000, while brick townhouses run from $700,000 to $1.4 million. Most of these condos and townhouses are condensed in the neighborhood's center, where there are also apartments to rent. "It's on the fringe of McLean; it's a wannabe McLean in a way. It's one of the top communities that was hit with teardowns and replaced with mini-mansions," says Brad Wisley, a Realtor with Century 21 New Millennium. Idylwood's original Cape Cod, raised ranch and split-level homes from the late 1940s onward are still on the market and start around $800,000. Though these older homes still define the character of Idylwood, it's been a recent trend for buyers to purchase them as teardowns, and replace them with Craftsman and Contemporary-style mansions with five or more beds, usually over $1.5 million. It's also popular to adorn lawns with bushes and flower beds, which complements the moderate tree cover throughout much of the neighborhood.

Idylwood locals can hit the trail to access other regional parks or quickly reach Falls Church for a bite to eat or an errand run. South of I-66 is Jefferson District Park, a larger green space featuring a playground, tennis and basketball courts, and golf courses for folks who want to putt-putt or hit the fairways.
