Rainbow blends country living with modern conveniences
Legend has it that there’s a pot of gold sitting at the end of every rainbow. Mere fantasy? Perhaps. But the Rainbow neighborhood, tucked into the northeast corner of Independence, has its fair share of treasures. Featuring majestic homes on huge lots surrounded by undeveloped land, Rainbow offers a feeling of rural living while still providing easy access to all of the modern amenities that today’s homebuyer wants. “For people who want to be out of the city and live more of a rural life, it’s utopia,” says Brian Rookstool of Midwest Land Group.
The neighborhood offers high-quality real estate on spacious lots
The median price for homes in Rainbow hovers around $420,000, and buyers can expect to pay an average of $240 per square foot. A smaller three-bedroom/two-bathroom ranch-style home starts at around $250,000, and prices can go as high as $2.1 million for a sprawling six-bedroom/six-bathroom Tudor-style estate situated on 133 acres of land. Rookstool says, “It’s definitely high-quality real estate. The prices tend to be at the upper end of the market.”
Students attend public schools with college prep programs
Students in the area can attend James Lewis Elementary, Bridger Middle and Fort Osage High School. Students at Fort Osage High can participate in the A+ Program, which is designed to help eligible students prepare for college and a career after high school by promoting academic excellence and career guidance through interactions with area business partners.
Nearby parks offer biking, hiking and horseback riding
Mountain bikers will love the 20 miles of trails that comprise the William Landahl Mountain Bike Park, located just a few miles south of Rainbow. Alternatively, Little Blue Trace County Park is about six miles to the west of Rainbow, offering 11 miles of hiking trails, as well as covered picnic areas and a softball field, not to mention more than 1,800 acres of undeveloped natural wonderland to explore. The nearby Osage Oaks Arena and Stables offers boarding for horses as well as riding lessons, and advanced riders have the opportunity to participate with the award-winning Kirkland Performance Horses Show Team. Those with a fondness for history can indulge their interests at the Fort Osage National Historic Landmark on the site of the original fort built under the direction of General William Clark, joint commander of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Groceries, retailers and diverse dining are all a short drive away
Because of the rural setting of the neighborhood, life in Rainbow is car-dependent. For groceries, residents can shop at Sun Fresh, Save a Lot or Price Chopper, all within 10 miles of the area. For household necessities, Target is approximately 11 miles from the neighborhood. Options for dining out are in the same vicinity, with The Happy Greek offering up traditional Greek cuisine that includes gyro platters and falafel bowls, as well as several American favorites like cheesesteak sandwiches, burgers and fried shrimp. A little further afield, diners will find Vivilore, where upscale American fare is served amidst antiques and artwork by local artists. Of course, with easy access to Highway 24, residents can also get to downtown Independence or Kansas City with ease for work, play or shopping.
