Indian Hills offers a rural setting with nearby conveniences
Indian Hills is a tiny Hidalgo County community that is almost entirely residential and surrounded by farmland. Its roughly 2,800 residents share many things with those in nearby Mercedes, its closest major city: a zip code, home value prices and amenities. But unlike those living in Mercedes, those living in Indian Hills enjoy a quieter, more rural setting to live in.
Farmland surrounds residential pockets and an RV golf community
Most of Indian Hills is agricultural and a few homes sit on acres of farmland. Residential sections are located on the far west and east sides, with manufactured, ranch-style and New Traditional homes on petite, grass-covered lots. Mature trees dot front and backyards, and most homes are surrounded by low fences. The La Floresta RV Park and Golf Course, a small retirement community on the east side, features a private executive layout plus a pool and clubhouse. Homes don’t go on the market often in Indian Hills, but when they do, they’re often priced between $150,000 and $250,000.
Students attend Mercedes ISD schools, district changes to come
Mercedes Independent School District serves the area, has a B-minus rating on Niche and offers intra-district transfer. In accordance with a new state law, the district prohibits students across all grades from using cell phones and other communication devices during the school day.
The schools zoned to the community are C-rated Sgt. William G. Harrell Elementary, C-rated Sgt. Manuel Chacon Middle and C-plus-rated Mercedes High. In May 2025, the district approved a plan to combine Harrell Elementary and Chacon Middle into one school. As of September 2025, the schools still operate separately.
Residents enjoy playgrounds, courts and nature trails
Residents head to Sunset Park for its walking path, playgrounds, basketball courts and ball fields. More outdoor recreation spots are nearby in Weslaco and Llano Grande, including Estero Llano Grande State Park, a sprawling wetland popular for birding and its 5 miles of trails.
Essentials and meals available at Indian Hills Grocery
Almost entirely residential except for a few local businesses, a church and Indian Hills Grocery, a convenience store and gas station that sells essentials, and serves a mix of Mexican and American dishes, frappes, and alcoholic drinks. Nearby Mercedes offers the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets and big box stores for shopping. Weslaco is also close by and features shopping, dining and the closest hospital, Knapp Medical Center.
Weslaco’s Onion Fest draws crowds with food, music and cars
Residents head to Weslaco for its annual Texas Onion Fest, which takes place in March and features live entertainment, food trucks, a vintage car show, and a boat and RV show.
Mile 11 North and FM 491 link Indian Hills to the region
Indian Hills doesn’t have public transportation, so residents get around by car. Mile 11 North and Farm to Market (FM) 491 are the two main roadways in the community and connect to nearby cities and towns. The closest airport with commercial flights is Valley International, less than 25 miles away.
Severe storms and flood risks are local weather considerations
While tornadoes are possible, they are uncommon. Severe thunderstorms are more common along with flooding. Hildago County experienced disaster-level flooding in March 2025. Homeowners can purchase flood insurance through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
