Arden offers a quiet setting near the White River and Broad Ripple

Arden is a small residential community in north Indianapolis . Tucked into the natural landscape along the White River that separates it from the trendy Broad Ripple neighborhood, Arden offers a secluded residential setting known for high-priced homes on large, wooded lots. At the same time, residents are just minutes away from one of the highest-rated private schools in the state, and they enjoy easy access to shopping, dining and recreation.

Expensive homes and an active neighborhood association

Arden is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Its median sales price in the mid-600,000s is 60 percent higher than the citywide median. The community features a variety of prominent styles, from cozy Cape Cods to midcentury ranches to multi-level Colonials to sprawling custom-built estates influenced by traditional architecture. Home prices typically range from the low $400,000s to nearly $1.5 million. The overall risk of flooding in the neighborhood is low, but prospective homebuyers should check insurance requirements if they are purchasing a home near the river.
There is no HOA, but the Arden Neighborhood Association is an active group of volunteers whose work includes maintaining architectural standards and upkeep of public spaces as well as organizing social gatherings. The association accepts donations on its website to fund its efforts, and residents can stay engaged through its monthly newsletter and Facebook group.

Nearby Park Tudor School is a major draw

The Park Tudor School is just minutes away in Meridian Hills . The co-ed, college preparatory school serves students from preschool through 12th grade. The nearby campus is home to a science center, a fine arts building and athletic facilities. St. Luke Catholic School, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade, is another private option in Meridian Hills.
The private vs. public choice is especially important in a neighborhood like Arden because it is split between two school districts. A small portion west of Pennsylvania Avenue is served by the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township, which is rated much higher than the Indianapolis Public Schools district that serves the rest of the community. Washington Township allows students to apply for transfers to schools outside of their geographic zones. IPS assigns younger students to enrollment zones, where they can choose which elementary and middle schools to attend. IPS students can attend any district high school.

Several riverfront recreational destinations nearby

Nearby recreational destinations along the White River include:

  • Marott Woods Nature Preserve, which offers primitive trails in a quiet setting
  • Holiday Park, a popular green space with trails and a nature center that hosts events
  • Broad Ripple Park, home to ballfields, athletic courts, a family center and a boat ramp
  • The Monon Trail, a regional hiking and biking path that crosses the river in Broad Ripple
Meridian Hills Country Club is next door, but membership requires being sponsored by a current member of the exclusive facility.

Art, shopping and dining just minutes away in trendy Broad Ripple

Broad Ripple is the city’s original cultural district. It is home to several art galleries and the Indianapolis Art Center, and the vibrant community is anchored by an eclectic mix of boutique stores, restaurants and more. Popular stops include:

  • The Shop, a local sports apparel and memorabilia chain
  • Fernando’s, a restaurant that fuses Mexican and Brazilian cuisines
  • BRICS, an independent ice cream shop housed in a former train depot
  • Broad Ripple Tavern, for pub grub, drinks and bar games with friends
  • Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, for fresh groceries and specialty items

Downtown Indianapolis is about a 20-minute drive from the neighborhood

Although buses run along College Avenue on the neighborhood’s east side, residents are mostly dependent on cars to get around. Commuters can get to downtown Indianapolis in about 20 minutes. They would typically drive about 5 miles south before connecting to Interstate 65 for the last 3 miles of the trip. Residents can take Meridian Street about 4 miles north to Interstate 465, which circles the city and provides the quickest route to Indianapolis International Airport a little over 20 miles away.
