Edgewood
Suburban Neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana
Marion County 46227
Mature trees provide shade for mature homes
The trees in Edgewood are mature, and so are the houses. Most homes in the neighborhood were built between the 1920s-60s, and are in a diverse set of styles reflecting their eras. Bungalows from before World War II mix with Cape Cods and ranches built in the years after. Split levels, foursquares and even a handful of Prairie-inspired designs are in the mix. And like much of Indy’s Southside neighborhoods, they’re affordable compared to elsewhere in the city. “Perry Township is kind of the last bastion of property in Indianapolis that can be acquired for under a quarter of a million dollars,” says real estate broker Rollin Jackson, a Southside resident since 1960. Homes in Edgewood range from $95,000-407,500.Park access in surrounding neighborhoods
Edgewood has no parks, but several are within a short drive. Southport Park, adjacent to a senior center, has a robust playground with a jungle gym, swings and see-saws. Southside Park in University Heights has a playground and picnic shelter next to a large field and Tollin-Akeman Park in South Emerson features a similar setup.Perry Township schools and award-winning Roncalli High
Edgewood’s schools, part of the Perry Township system, enhance its family-friendly reputation. Most neighborhood residents attend Clinton W. Young Elementary, which receives a C-plus rating on Niche. Students west of Madison Avenue go to nearby Homecroft Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating. Both schools feed into Southport 6th Grade Academy and then Southport Middle School. They’ll attend Southport High School, which Niche rates as the most diverse in the state due in part to the significant Burmese population in neighboring Southport. All Southport schools earn B-plus ratings. Edgewood is also home to the adjoining K-8 St. Jude Catholic School and Roncalli High School. A-rated Roncalli is a three-time National Blue Ribbon winner and one of the top high schools for athletes in the state. Roncalli has won 10 state championships in football and five in softball.BACI serves local Burmese community
Edgewood is home to the Burmese American Community Institute. Over the past 15 years, more than 20,000 Burmese refugees have relocated to Indy’s Southside neighborhoods after fleeing religious persecution in their homeland. BACI helps newcomers with finding employment and fitting into American culture, among other programs that serve the community. The Institute also hosts events commemorating Myanmar Union Day, World Refugee Day, and other important dates.Interstates and Madison Avenue put most of Indy in quick reach
Madison Ave. is a six-mile drive straight to the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The only bus route in Edgewood runs along Madison, which is also the lone street in the neighborhood with dedicated bike lanes. Interstate 465, which circles around Indianapolis, forms Edgewood’s northern boundary. I-65, which leads north to downtown and south towards Louisville, is Edgewood’s eastern boundary. “The neighborhood is on a wonderful traffic pattern,” Kincaid says.A diverse array of grocery and dining options
In addition to a Kroger, Edgewood has stores that reflect the area’s diversity, such as Chingitti Halal Market and YP African Market. And no restaurant underlines that better than El Sabor Mexican & Chinese Food, which offers two very distinct menus. Other neighborhood locations, such as Flap-Jacks Pancake House and Kim’s Kakery, Bakery and Cafe, offer sweet items and friendly vibes. “Most restaurants are smaller and local,” says local real estate agent Bob Kincaid. “People are probably going to see some of their friends when they go in.”Creeks and interstates also carry downsides
No fewer than five creeks traverse through Edgewood, so many parts of the neighborhood face potential flood risks when their banks overflow. A sound barrier along I-65 helps mitigate noise in the eastern part of the neighborhood, but no such wall exists along I-465 to the north.
