Leafy trees and a large green park in an old Westside suburb
Down to earth west of Downtown Indianapolis, Garden City is an old-growth suburb with contemporary garden apartment communities and older single-family homes on leafy neighborhood streets. Though only a few may recognize this community of 16,000 people, Garden City neighbors the Indianapolis Motor Speedway about a mile north, where hundreds of thousands of motorsports fans come each May to see IndyCars race upward of 200 miles per hour around the world-famous track.
The Garden City neighborhood is just a short distance from downtown Indianapolis.

A mix of new development, older homes and garden apartments
Bounded to the west by Interstate 74, the community is bisected by Rockville Road, an important neighborhood thoroughfare. The northern half of the community features apartment complexes, city park space, a few old residential blocks and small tracts of modern single-family homes in subdivisions with curvilinear roads and cul de sacs. Homes in the southern section of the community are generally older, arranged in a more traditional urban grid and built in the first half of the 20th century. Single-family homes average about 1,300 square feet, which means they’re a bit smaller than the typical American home these days. But that also means homebuying is a bit more affordable here with the average home value at $150,000. While older Craftsman bungalows, cottages and ranch-style homes sell for as low as $100,000, buyers who want a larger, more contemporary home can find properties that suit them at $200,000 to $300,000.

Highway commercial fare and Main Street fun in nearby Speedway
Though primarily residential, Washington Street forms the community’s southern boundary and is a major commercial thoroughfare lined by low-slung strip malls, gas stations, fast-food joints, commercial services, pawn shops and a Kroger grocery store. In the middle of the community, Rockville Road has fewer businesses. But a Sam’s Club location at the I-74 interchange and Dammann’s Garden Center & Greenhouse near Thatcher Park are popular shopping destinations. North of the community, the Main Street corridor in the nearby town of Speedway features local restaurants, diners, pubs and a brewery. Many people gather here at night and during the weekend, but the area reaches a fever pitch in May each year for the Indianapolis 500. In addition to the big international race, the track is busy for multiple weekends with practice sessions and qualifying. Other races, events and concerts at the track bring a lot of activity to the area throughout the summer and fall, but many nights and weekends are quieter than others.

Neighborhood recreation at Thatcher Park and Community Center
Thatcher Park, a nearly 22-acre facility, includes sports fields and a recreation center. “We take our son there to go swimming a lot,” says Brian Smith, a local real estate broker and owner of Great Woods Realty. “And there’s always people there playing golf and pickleball.” The recreational area also includes the Thatcher Golf Course, a flat, heavily wooded nine-hole course. Just to the south is the Chuck Klein Softball Complex, named after the Phillies outfielder and baseball Hall of Famer who attended Southport High School in Indianapolis. The complex has three lighted diamonds used by the local softball league and is also available for private rentals.

I lived in Garden City for the majority of my life (18 years). I'm currently in college but my family still resides there. The community is friendly and we have known our neighbors for a very long time (probably longer than I've been alive). The neighborhood is a little run down in some spots but recently people have begun to clean things up. The schools are excellent and the people are even better if you take the time to get to know them.
