Glendale has always been more than a mall
For generations, “Glendale” was Indianapolis shorthand for the neighborhood’s most prominent landmark – Glendale Shopping Center, which was the first shopping mall in Indianapolis when it opened in 1958. The neighborhood itself has outlived that tenant, which was razed and reimagined in its current form as Glendale Town Center in 2008. And as the time since has proven, there’s always been a lot more to Glendale than a mall. This tree-lined neighborhood on Indy's north side is a quiet escape from both its eponymous shopping center and the action in nearby Broad Ripple.

Mature trees shade mid-century homes
They knew what they were doing when they built the mall in this neighborhood nine miles north of downtown Indianapolis -- the area was booming with new houses. These ranches and bungalows built from the 1940s-’60s are the backbone of the neighborhood. Joining them are several two-story homes built in the past 50 years. All are on lots filled with trees that have matured along with the neighborhood. Ranches range from $195,000-475,000, while Colonial Revivals and custom-built two-story homes range from $492,500-1.1 million.

Glendale Town Center isn't the only attraction for shopping and dining
Glendale Town Center may look different than its predecessor, but it’s still a major part of Glendale’s identity. Major retailers like Lowe’s, Target and Old Navy anchor the shopping center, which also features a 12-screen Landmark movie theatre. Sahm’s Place, a sports bar with an adjoining dining area, is a neighborhood favorite for grabbing a meal or catching a game on TV. Thai Curbside by Sawasdee, which relocated to Glendale from its prior location on 86th Street following the pandemic, is quickly growing into a neighborhood favorite thanks to its friendly service and generous portions of authentic Thai street food. And no business has served neighborhood homeowners longer than venerable Hedlund’s Hardware, which has been here since 1929. The nearest grocery options are an Aldi and Meijer just south of the neighborhood on Keystone Ave.

Broad Ripple Farmer's Market runs year-round
Not even mercurial Indiana weather can slow down the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market, which is held at Glendale Town Center. The Farmer’s Market is held indoors from November through April, then moves outside to the parking lot near Lowe’s for the remainder of the year. Glendale’s proximity to neighboring Broad Ripple means residents can also easily access annual events like the Broad Ripple Art Walk and Broad Ripple Duck Race.

New library location enhances Glendale
There is no park in Glendale. But the brand-new home of the Indianapolis Public Library Glendale Branch, opened in March 2024 on the site of the former John Strange Elementary School, was designed to fit in naturally with its surroundings. “We wanted to make it feel residential and homey,” says Glendale Branch manager Jena Mattix. “There are lots of nice yards and gardens in the neighborhood. We maintained as many old trees as possible.” The library moved into the new building from its former location inside Glendale Town Center, providing patrons with a larger and more accessible space. This includes areas for remote workers and an outdoor reading area. “When we had our grand opening, it was fun to welcome our old patrons and see how thrilled they are with the building,” Mattix says. Broad Ripple Park, about 1.5 miles from Glendale, is the nearest park space.
