Irvington blends historic charm with affordability on the east side

Historic, eclectic, and only slightly spooky, Irvington is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Indianapolis. This leafy Eastside community offers affordable homes, walkability to nearby shops and restaurants, and rich history that dates back to 1870. It’s the former home of Butler University and has more than 2,000 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Irvington is known for its welcoming atmosphere and architectural significance, but many Hoosiers also know it as one of Indy’s most haunted spots. Residents get into the spirit every October during the Historic Irvington Halloween Festival, which draws tens of thousands of attendees to the neighborhood every year.

Irvington homes feature timeless designs and character

Irvington has a mix of gridded, brick-paved roads and curving streets that follow the natural terrain. Most homes were built between the late 1800s and the mid-1900s and feature styles like Tudor Revival, brick bungalow, American Foursquare and Craftsman. “People are bringing homes back to life over there. You can take something built in 1960 and make it look so fresh and new,” says Aubrey Walters, a real estate broker with EXP Realty and host with ADTV. “It’s mostly homes and comfortable neighborhood living.” Towering trees give the neighborhood a park-like vibe despite the compact lot sizes. Detached garages often sit behind homes, but street parking is also common. Prices start in the low $100,000s and can reach up to the high $400,000s. As a historic district, any exterior changes, new construction or demolition require approval from the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission.

Halloween festival and ghost tours add to Irvington’s spooky spirit

After more than 150 years, Irvington has lost none of its historic charm or community feel. “They have a strong community, especially when it comes to events,” says Bethany Schultz, a real estate agent with United Real Estate Indianapolis. The Historic Irvington Halloween Festival has been a tradition for about 80 years and brings more than 80,000 visitors during the week leading up to Halloween. Along with the typical pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating, events throughout the week include a masquerade ball, parade and zombie bike ride. You can also learn more about Irvington’s haunted history during a ghost tour of the neighborhood and visit spots like the Benton House, the Irving Theater and the old Irvington Masonic Lodge No. 666.

Where to grab dinner and drinks on Washington Street and beyond

Next door, Sahm’s Tavern and Sports Bar is an extension of the Sahm’s family of restaurants that offers a relaxed atmosphere and Sahm’s famous coffee cake. Other local spots to grab a bite or a drink include:

  • Smash’d Midwest Burgers, which serves up specialty burgers and fries
  • Strange Bird, a tropical cocktail lounge dishing out oysters and Japanese fare
  • Snug, a cozy Irish bar with Guinness on tap and top-notch whiskey

Washington Street offers quick access to I-465 and downtown

Most people drive, but there are IndyGo bus stops on major roads like Washington Street and 10th Street. Washington Street gets a good amount of traffic because it’s a major east-west thoroughfare and the main route to Interstate 465, which is only 2 miles away. You can take Washington Street straight to downtown Indianapolis, about 5 miles away, and get there within 15 to 30 minutes depending on the traffic.

Lived here 47 years, moved from Broadripple, Irvington doesn't have Br's hard edge. Great place to raise a family. Small town feel, 5 miles from City center. Neat wildlife and birds. Opossums, raccoons, rabbits, and maybe a coyote. Lots of owls and a red tailed hawk or two. Nice neighbors.
