The oldest existing residential neighborhood in Indianapolis
Lockerbie Square is not Indianapolis’ literal birthplace, but its cobblestone streets and 19th-century houses are a well-preserved throwback to the city’s early days. This is Indy’s oldest surviving residential neighborhood. Named for a Scotsman but largely settled by German immigrants after the Civil War, its residents included beloved “Hoosier Poet” James Whitcomb Riley. Riley even wrote a poem, "Lockerbie Street," inspired by his neighborhood. Saved by preservationists in the 1970s, Lockerbie Square is now one of Indy’s hidden gems. “There's a lot of places downtown that you only know if you know -- you just happen to stumble on it,” says Lockerbie Square resident Simon Kuntz. “That's what Lockerbie is. Unless you've lived in Indianapolis a while, you don't realize there's an old, historic neighborhood with huge trees right next to the downtown city center.”
Lockerbie Square is conveniently located close to the heart of Downtown Indianapolis.

Classic 19th century houses and repurposed condos
Several styles of housing are more prevalent here than any other part of the city – Federal, Italianate and Queen Anne designs that reflect the neighborhood’s development in the latter half of the 19th century. Industrial buildings have been converted to condos, such as the former Lockerbie Glove Factory. There are also a handful of cottages as well as custom houses built in the 21st century. “There’s everything from million-dollar houses to small, 1,000-square foot homes,” Kuntz says. Condos range from $240,100-$503,550 and house prices are between $496,000-$2.7 million.

James Whitcomb Riley Home a community gathering place
The idea of public park space was a novelty when Lockerbie Square was developed, and there are no parks in the neighborhood. But its tree-lined streets serve as an urban oasis just blocks from the hubbub of downtown Indy. “I feel you kind of lose track that you're three or four blocks from Indiana's tallest building because of the tall trees and big houses,” Kuntz says. The James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home and grounds are the neighborhood’s primary gathering place. Highland Park and Willard Park in the neighboring Holy Cross neighborhood are within walking distance.

Close to Indy's top dining destinations
Built at a time when residents traveled downtown on horse or foot, Lockerbie Square remains a short bike ride or walk from shopping and dining options, including the dozens of restaurants and bars along Massachusetts Avenue. That includes The Rathskeller, a German beer hall and biergarten located in the historic Das Deutsch Haus-Athenaeum Building. Established here in 1894, it’s the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis. But the highest-rated restaurant in Indianapolis is right in the neighborhood: Vida, the city’s lone AAA Four-Diamond recipient. Vida serves four-course meals as well as vegan and vegetarian tasting menus. For many, items such as the ricotta doughnuts make dessert a favorite course. There are a pair of nearby breweries – Sun King and St. Joseph – as well as the Easley Winery. The Bottleworks District, which has 17 restaurants and bars, a bowling alley and a movie theater housed in a former Coca-Cola bottling plant, is also accessible on foot. For groceries, Whole Foods and Needler’s Fresh Market both have locations just a block outside the neighborhood.
The Garage Food Hall is located in Bottleworks District, and features many great dining options.

Fourth of July a neighborhood celebration
Lockerbie Square’s Fourth of July celebration has taken place at the Riley Home since 1916, with residents picnicking on the lawn following the neighborhood parade. In autumn, the neighborhood celebrates its German heritage with the L’Ocktoberfest block party. Colts games, Pacers games and other events at Lucas Oil Stadium and Gainbridge Fieldhouse are also reachable without the hassle of paying to park.

Arsenal Tech, Indy’s largest high school with more than 2,100 students enrolled, is also nearby. Its 76-acre campus has a college feel, and the school adds to that with its five career academies: STEM, Law and Public Safety, Skilled Trades and Human Services, Media Arts and Design, and Teaching, Leading and Learning. Arsenal Tech has a C Niche rating. Herron High School, a public charter school with an A-plus rating, is less than 2 miles from Lockerbie Square.

Interstate puts all of Indy within reach
In addition to being close to downtown, the neighborhood is adjacent to Interstates 65 and 70. The IndyGo 3, 11 and 21 bus routes also run through Lockerbie Square. “You can go anywhere in the city within 20 minutes,” Kuntz says.
Theft from -- and of -- vehicles can be a concern
The CAP Index gives the neighborhood a 9 of 10 crime score. Incidents of theft, particularly from parked vehicles, are most commonly reported. Vehicles themselves are also stolen -- rates of auto theft are higher than average. However, Lockerbie Square has fewer reports of auto theft than most parts of downtown Indy. Kuntz says neighborhood residents are usually out and about. "People are almost always outside talking,” he says. “It truly feels like a community.” Occasional flooding is another concern for parts of the neighborhood near Park Ave. and Michigan St. due to storm runoff.
