There are plenty of ways to spend the day outdoors in North Central, an Indianapolis neighborhood that is bordered by parks, nature preserves and the White River. "It's full of green space, friendly people and plenty of parks and recreation," says Miriam Odegard, a Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis. Residents walk, bike or skate along the Monon Trail, a pedestrian pathway running along the neighborhood's west side. North Central is 11 miles from downtown Indianapolis and adjacent to some of the city's best high-end shopping at The Fashion Mall at Keystone. Nearby streets provide a convenient connection to downtown Indy for major conventions and festivals.

Parks, preserves and greenways near North Central
Marott Woods Nature Preserve and Broad Ripple Park border the neighborhood, with a combined 161 acres of outdoor space. At Broad Ripple Park, nature lovers can hunt for wildflowers while walking through the 10-acre woods, while the health-conscious can take fitness classes like dance aerobics at the new family center, which opened in 2023. The park also allows boating and fishing on the White River. Marott Woods Nature Preserve also provides trails for meandering through the woods, where members of the Amos Butler Audubon Society lead wildflower and nature tours. The Monon Trail is a rails-to-trails route that begins in Hamilton County and connects to downtown Indy. In North Central, it traverses the woods and crosses over bridges with pleasant views of the river below.

North Central has single-family homes, apartments and condos, many of which surround the neighborhood's lakes. Low-lying ranches, raised ranches and boxy Cape Cods line the neighborhood's streets and often have attached two- or three-car garages. Single-family houses with three and four bedrooms can start around $255,000. Waterfront houses with private docks fall near the neighborhood's median price of $450,000. Toward the southern part of the neighborhood, Oxbow Estates has luxury properties along the water ranging from 2,800 square feet to 7,700 square feet and costing upwards of $1.1 million. With a median lot size of 19,000 square feet, many properties have large, grassy front yards and backyards big enough for a deck.

Luxury finds at the Fashion Mall at Keystone
North Central offers luxury shopping and dining experiences. The fashion-forward can make a trip to the Fashion Mall at Keystone, with over 40 high-end retailers including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany and Co. Nearby, the Ironworks Hotel hosts several restaurants on the bottom floor including Blue Sushi Sake Grill, where diners sip a cocktail while watching the chef hand-make their sushi. Whole Foods, Aldi, and Kroger are all located along East 86th Street on the neighborhood's north side.

Washington Township schools make the grade
Nearby schools are part of the Washington Township Metropolitan School District, which earns an overall A-minus from Niche. Students may attend Nora Elementary and Northview Middle School, which both earn a B-minus, and North Central High School, which earns an A. Students there can earn college credits through Indiana University’s Advanced College Project. Band, choir and theater students can perform in the newly renovated 1,255-seat auditorium.

Indy festivals for gaming, theater and art
Downtown Indianapolis is a hot spot for year-round events. "The Indianapolis downtown is set up for fun," Odegard says. "It's centrally located, so we're able to host a lot of big conventions." One of the biggest is Gen Con, a gaming convention that takes place in August, drawing over 70,000 attendees. The city celebrates creativity through the IndyFringe Theatre Festival and the Penrod Arts Fair. Closer to North Central, the Indy Art Center hosts classes, exhibits and events including the Broad Ripple Art Fair.
Keystone Avenue leads to downtown Indy
Keystone Avenue provides a direct route downtown for those who prefer to drive. It borders the neighborhood's east side. Public bus stops serving the number 86 and number 26 bus are located toward the neighborhood's north end. Indianapolis International Airport is located about 30 miles away, with nonstop flights across the U.S. and Canada.
Flooding is a factor in North Central
North Central's waterfront areas are susceptible to flooding, particularly on the south and east sides of the neighborhood.
