Interstate 65 runs through the middle of the neighborhood, making the 6-mile drive into downtown Indianapolis take 15 minutes or less. Catching one of the athletic teams in action is also a popular pastime. “We have all sports here essentially — football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse — that non-university people can come to attend,” says Matt Gray of UIndy’s Residence Life office. He adds that Christel De Haan Fine Arts Center features year-round ticketed events including concerts, theater performances and guest lectures. The UIndy Tennis Center is a public, covered facility where locals can play singles or doubles matches. A small taste of the outdoors is available at the university’s central Smith Mall, featuring large patches of grass and a reflecting pool. Southside Park is where outdoor, off-campus gatherings happen. The park features a playground, a picnic pavilion and an open sports field.
