A bustling college town near Downtown Indianapolis
Ideally placed at the junction between two main interstates, University Heights is a college town six miles south of Indianapolis. Aside from its obvious connection to the University of Indianapolis, University Heights is where a blend of 12,000 residents calls home. Buyers express interest in the area because of its lower housing prices and proximity to the big city. Despite its status as a college town, there are numerous K-12 schools nearby where parents can send their kids. Much of the recreation centers around the University but that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive to college students. Folks enjoy open green spaces and sports as a pastime. Crime is more or less on par with the national average, and things are quieter outside Indianapolis.

There are several ways non-university community members can engage in and enjoy the school’s events and facilities. Krannert Memorial Library welcomes the greater community and features a large collection of volumes, digital databases and study areas for anyone looking to find their next read. Catching one of the athletic teams in action is also a popular pastime. “We have all sports here essentially — football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse — that non-university people can come to attend,” says Matt Gray of UIndy’s Residence Life office. He adds that Christel De Haan Fine Arts Center features year-round ticketed events including concerts, theater performances and guest lectures.
The UIndy Tennis Center is a public, covered facility where locals can play singles or doubles matches. A small taste of the outdoors is available at the university’s central Smith Mall, featuring large patches of grass and a reflecting pool. Southside Park is where outdoor, off-campus gatherings happen. The park features a playground, a picnic pavilion and an open sports field. The neighborhood’s youngest ball players can enroll to play at the Indiana Central Little League complex, the state’s oldest Little League Park.
