Valley Mills offer rural setting outside Indianapolis
About 9 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, Valley Mills is a spread out, bucolic neighborhood that enjoys easy access to the city. Valley Mills is part of the Decatur Township, which has more than 200 years of history in the area. Early residents in the township were mostly Quakers from the Carolinas; much of the area has been preserved as farmland, including a large portion of Valley Mills. The neighborhood itself was first platted in the 1830s and was formerly known as Northport and Fremont. Today, it’s home to around 12,000 Hoosiers who prefer a quiet, rural home setting without being too far from the city.
Neighborhood has many homes from the early 20th century to today
While few homes in Valley Mills date back to its beginnings nearly two centuries ago, numerous houses built at the turn of the 20th century still stand today. Midcentury architecture is popular here and includes many sizeable ranchers, split-levels with vinyl siding and traditional American neo-Colonials. Some community developments feature newer constructions from the 1990s and early 2000s. Despite the wide variety of home styles and years of construction, price tags rarely exceed the $300,000s.
Valley Mills is home to several public school facilities
Part of the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township, Valley Mills is home to six public school facilities. The main schools serving the neighborhood are Valley Mills Elementary School, Decatur Middle School and Decatur Central High School, which are all clustered together in the northwest part of the neighborhood. Decatur Middle and DCHS are both divided into Small Learning Communities (SLCs), elective programs in which students are arranged by skills and interests. Alternative learning facilities include the Decatur Elementary Learning Center, which serves first to sixth graders, and the Decatur Township School for Excellence, which helps students pursue Core 40 and Academic Honors diplomas.
Amenities includes gym, disc golf course and wooded park
Between the middle and high school campuses is Armstrong Pavilion, which not only acts as a school gym but also a member-driven wellness center. For less than the average gym membership, residents can shoot some hoops, lift weights, enroll in a yoga class or take a few laps in the pool or on the indoor track. Outdoor recreation can be found at Carson Park, which features nine baseball diamonds, a playground and a water park to help with the hotter days. Frisbee buffs can polish off their long game at the Hawk’s Nest Disc Golf Course, boasting a full 18 holes. And when visitors want to escape into nature for a few minutes or a few hours, they may go to Dollar Hide Creek Park, a 17-acre wooded area with waterside walking trails.
Residents are close to Walmart Neighborhood Market
Day-to-day amenities are within easy driving distance for all Valley Mills residents. Walmart Neighborhood Market, a post office, a daycare and more sit on or near Kentucky Avenue, which borders the neighborhood on the west.
Commuters take I-70 and I-465 downtown
Residents who work downtown can typically get to the city in 20 minutes or less, thanks to the Interstates 70 and 465 interchange at the northwest corner of Valley Mills. And frequent fliers will appreciate being directly across the interstate from Indianapolis International Airport.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
