Neighborhood township incorporated in 1852

Situated between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre is Inkerman, a small residential suburb that borders the Susquehanna River. Inkerman is a part of Jenkins Township, which is one of dozens of Luzerne County municipalities: "These townships all have their own government and their own identity, which creates a strong sense of community pride and makes these places very close-knit,” says Thomas M. Leighton, president of C.A. Leighton Company Inc. and former mayor of Wilkes-Barre. At the time of the township’s incorporation in 1852, the region was known for its role in the coal industry; mines like Susquehanna Anthracite, which was established in 1867, still operate in the area to this day. Although Inkerman itself is primarily residential, its proximity to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton gives locals easy access to urban amenities and retail centers.

Single-family homes and multi-family duplexes

Inkerman residents can find a mix of single-family homes and multi-family duplexes in hilly residential pockets branching off Main Street. Common home styles here include American Foursquares, ranch styles and traditional residences, many of which feature vinyl-paneled facades, gabled roofs and covered front porches. Some properties have driveways and garages, but street parking is available and often used in residential areas. Home prices range from about $120,000 to $300,000, but some five-bedroom residences can list for more than $450,000. This neighborhood also encompasses Wesley Village, a United Methodist Homes retirement community that offers independent living and personal care for seniors.

Locals celebrate the holidays in Wilkes-Barre

“Lots of township residents celebrate the big events and holidays down in Wilkes-Barre,” Leighton says. One such event is the Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade, which has been hosted in Wilkes-Barre for over 75 years and shows appreciation for those who have served in the United States military. During the parade, locals line the streets and cheer on the procession, which features servicemen marching in uniform and live band performances. In the summertime, patriotic pride continues at the Wilkes-Barre Fourth of July Celebration, where members of the community can enjoy live entertainment, local vendors, games and fireworks.

Relatively nice area. People are nice and don't bother each other much. What could change is more local events for residents.
