Pocketed alongside the winding Monongahela River is the township of Luzerne. Containing vast farmland and dense forests, Luzerne is a quiet, rural region with a modest population of just 5,602 residents on the western edge of Fayette County. "It’s very nice and it’s quiet," says local Realtor Jamie Santore of Tri County Realty Associates, who has sold over 100 homes throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. "Having kids there is nice because you know the whole area. Everybody knows everybody there."

While the Fayette State Correctional Institution is stationed along the river to the township's westside, you'll find loads of homes scattered throughout the hilly countryside. Ranch homes are common throughout Luzerne, though you'll also find cottages and Tudor homes, particularly in the more remote sections of the township. Older single-story homes typically price between $75,000 to $200,000 while newer, 1,500-square-foot builds can top out closer to $300,000. The housing market is relatively competitive in Luzerne, though some homes may take several months to sell. "If it’s priced where it should be, it could go within a month or maybe two months, but some homes can sit for a while," Santore says.

Students in Luzerne are served by the Brownsville Area School District. Children can attend Brownsville Area Elementary School before moving on to Brownsville Area Middle School. Both schools earn an overall grade of C-minus from Niche. Teenagers can go to Brownsville Area High School, which earns a C grade from Niche and offers a strong athletics program along with numerous clubs and organizations such as FBLA and a debate team.

After school, take the kids to Luzerne's east side for a play date at Redstone Park or go to Tower Hill Athletic Field for batting practice. You can also travel north into Hiller and visit the duck pond at Patsy Hillman Park, which hosts an annual Bigfoot Day where locals dress up as sasquatches and share stories Bigfoot and UFO encounters while enjoying food and drinks from local vendors.

To fill the fridge, locals often travel 8 miles north to pick up fresh groceries from Walmart Supercenter off Highway 40. You can also visit the local Dollar General in Republic for additional shopping necessities. Penncraft Market off Penncraft Road is a staple for Luzerne locals. A convenience store, bakery and deli under one single roof, the roadside market is a hot spot for residents to purchase prepared food or order specialty cakes and sandwich platters. Route 40 Classic Diner off National Pike E is another hot spot, where you can gather the family for a burger and fries. If you'd prefer to order delivery, look no further than Fat Angelo's — a local pizza chain with locations throughout Western Pennsylvania.

A stone's throw from the diner, Brownsville Drive-In is one of Luzerne's top attractions. Without an indoor movie theater in the township's vicinity, locals flock to the drive-in to catch the latest blockbuster flicks while munching on foods from the concession stand.

Located 44 miles south of Pittsburgh, Luzerne residents can enjoy easy drives through the township's hilly, traffic-free landscape. The Pennsylvania turnpike runs directly through the region's northside, giving locals a straight shot to the city for a day trip.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
