Jackson community with spacious houses and lush tree canopy
The Stanworth area is bordered by the Old Hickory Mall, several shopping centers and a historically-themed site that honors hometown folk hero and famous train engineer, Casey Jones . In between these landmarks are subdivisions with spacious homes and groups of mature pines, oaks and crepe myrtle trees. Sparse neighborhood traffic allows residents to take peaceful evening walks during the summer, while others enjoy sledding down the hills during winter. “We loved the streets, we loved the trees and we loved the lots at the time. It was just a pretty area, and an established area,” says Madison County Commissioner Cyndi Bryant, who has lived in the Oakmont subdivision with husband and former Tennessee Congressman Ed Bryant for 15 years. Neighbor Londa Rohlfing concurs with the Bryants about the natural scenery. “I like all the trees because I came from where there were no trees. I just think it’s pleasant and the homes are different. They’re not cookie-cutter,” Rohlfing says. “But it was the house more than anything, and the price of the house. We looked at Cookeville, East Tennessee, but we didn’t like that many mountains.”
Some Stanworth homes are situated on expansive lots with generous shady canopies.

Large custom homes on spacious lots
The subdivisions in Stanworth include gated communities and the homes here range from ranch-styles to larger Traditionals and Colonial Revivals with Greek-influenced porches. Although some blocks consist of compact lots, there are many 1-acre properties with room for trees, backyard pools, footbridges and gazebos. Subdivision communities like Sutton Place draw retirees and busy professionals with what some call “zero lot lines,” aka lots requiring little upkeep due to mostly being made out of concrete. The interiors of these houses often feature stone tiles, wood flooring and amenities like wet bars. Town and Country Realtor Robert Eatman says the houses here have “more character than the newer stuff that’s to the north. Which is expensive, and every fourth or fifth house is the same thing. It’s not like down here. Most of all this stuff is custom.” Price points here can go from $215,000 for a house that’s under 2,000 square feet to nearly $400,000 for one that’s over 3,000 square feet. Some homes with footprints well over 4,000 square feet can go for more than $600,000.
Custom homes can be found throughout Stanworth.

Old Country Store buffet or pasta dinners at Old Town Spaghetti Store
Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store is one of the anchors of the Casey Jones Village, which is home to the Casey Jones museum and a row of Old West-style buildings that are home to several local businesses. Known for its down home cooking, the Old Country Store was rated by USA Today as one of the top 10 buffets in the nation, and the décor isn’t bad either. Cookware items like rolling pins and cast iron skillets hang on the walls alongside vintage signs for businesses like the Western Union Telegraph & Cable Office. The restaurant is also attached to the Dixie Cafe, which serves the same fare. The Old Town Spaghetti Store is another neighborhood favorite where patrons dine on various pasta dishes. Other dinner options include Red Hook Cajun Seafood. “You can’t go wrong with the chicken wings. I like to mix them with lemon pepper and hot sauce. But I see a lot of people getting the snow crabs, potatoes, eggs, broccoli and calamari,” says Red Hook staffer Brandon Love. The shopping centers that border Stanworth are also home to chain brands like Sam’s Club and Walmart.

Learn about railroad conductor and folk hero at Casey Jones museum
The Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum is open to the public and provides self-guided audio tours for a small admission fee . The museum’s attractions manager, Josh Mumford, says “Jones is actually one of the most famous, if not arguably the most famous railroader in the world.” Visitors can listen to “My Husband, Casey Jones,” a song by the engineer’s widow, Janie Jones. Behind the museum is a full-scale model of the type of locomotive Jones was driving the night of his famous crash. The tour also takes folks past the white Victorian-era house where the engineer lived from 1888 until his death in 1900. Other items on exhibit include the pocket watch Jones had in his possession on the night of the crash. In addition to tours, the museum also hosts story and craft times for children in its theater, and there are plans for the village to revive its miniature golf course. At Muse Park about 2 miles from Stanworth, visitors can enjoy basketball courts and playgrounds. A narrow trail winds through the park’s dense woods for those who hike, while others can relax on the docks and take in views of the pond.

Home to Andrew Jackson Elementary
This community is home to Andrew Jackson Elementary School, which receives a C-minus grade from the rating site Niche. The area is also zoned for Jackson Central-Merry Middle and High Schools, which both operate out of a building that reopened in 2021. These two schools don’t currently have Niche ratings. The original Jackson Central-Merry High, which had closed in 2016, resulted from a 1970 merger between the city’s historically Black Merry High School and all-white Jackson High School. Stanworth is also close to several private school options like St. Mary’s School and Jackson Christian School, the latter of which receives a B-plus from Niche. St. Mary’s, which has existed since 1878, serves students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. For kindergarteners to 12th graders, Jackson Christian’s curriculum emphasizes science, technology, religion and art — aka the STREAM model.
Andrew Jackson Elementary School has a student teacher ratio of 20:1.

Autumn fun at annual Casey Jones Village Festival
Festival goers who attend the Casey Jones Village Festival in October can browse items made by local artists, enjoy live music and visit the site’s historic attractions. Other activities include a petting zoo with both farm and exotic animals, face painting and trackless amusement rides. Jackson city leaders also hope to bring more events to the area with their future plans to build a convention center complex near the Old Hickory Mall. This facility would include a 6,500-seat multi-use arena for concerts and aim to provide an alternative to Memphis for West Tennessee conferences. “That’s one thing this area’s missing. I know that our police chief, fire chiefs, they want to find something other than Memphis to come to. They see that as a huge opportunity,” says Jackson Mayor Scott Conger.
Located right off I-40 and U.S. 45 commuter routes
The Jackson Transit Authority provides alternative transportation and has several bus stops in the community. Many here, however, commute by car and take Interstate 40 and the U.S. 45 bypass to reach major destinations. The bypass runs directly to downtown Jackson, which is about 5 miles south. I-40 connects to Memphis about 83 miles west of Jackson. The Casey Jones Village also has 24 Tesla towers in its parking lot. Although Jackson is closer to the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, many here go to the Memphis International Airport for out-of-state flights. The Jackson-Madison County General Hospital about 2 miles south of Stanworth provides major medical care.
