Highlands

Taking to Dunn Ave for shopping and seafood
The main commercial thoroughfare stretches through the center of the community. The street starts off at Busch Drive at the corner of the Anheuser-Busch facility, turning into Dunn Avenue west of Interstate 95, and splintering into the more residential Leonid Road. Shoppers take this roadway to visit retail plazas containing bank locations, local businesses and service providers. Sam's Club is to the east, and Highlands Square has a Publix supermarket, hardware store and clothing shops. There are several chain restaurants, but many local eateries serve freshly caught seafood. Some popular establishments are casual spots with drive-through options like Mr. Snappers or Jax Fish Shrimp and Chicken. Those looking to dine in can order at Ship 2 Shore Seafood & Steaks. An accessible community with highways
Highlands, like most of the city, is car-dependent. However, the area does have public transportation available through Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) bus routes. Most locals travel along Dunn Avenue, Lem Turner Road and Broward Road to get in and out of the area. Interstate 95 is a part of the neighborhood's eastside, offering quick trips to the rest of the North Florida region. Baptist North Medical Office is less than 5 miles away and contains a dedicated emergency care facility for children. There are also several places of worship within Highlands, including the Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Long-standing homes mixed with newer constructions
The suburban community has various housing options, from midcentury ranches of concrete and brick to more contemporary homes built over the last five years. Some of the newest homes are inside the Fox Ridge subdivision. Around half of Highlands' residents are renters, and the area has several apartment complexes. "The biggest highlight to the community is that homes have a lower cost than other areas of Jacksonville," Miller says. Residences generally range between $150,000 and $300,000, although some newer homes can reach upwards of $450,000 or more. Properties near the Trout River have a risk of flooding during hurricanes and storm surges, especially during the summer.Several elementary schools in the community
The community contains multiple schools, including Garden City Elementary which has a B-minus from Niche. In 2023, Highlands Elementary, another neighborhood school, was leveled to make room for a new facility. The city has plans to combine the student population with Pine Estates Elementary in the future. In the meantime, children will attend classes inside Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary; each school receives a C-minus from Niche. Highlands Middle provides a magnet Aviation and Military Sciences Program and also has a C-minus. First Coast High earns a C grade and offers students the chance to earn an associate degree. Teens may also attend the charter Biscayne High.Taking to the river and park spaces
Boaters can head to Bert Maxwell Boat Ramp To access the lower Trout River. Due to the shallow waters, the ramp is more suitable for smaller boats. The site is also visited by those looking to fish on the floating docks or enjoy the riverside views. Locals catch trout and shrimp within the brackish waters. Garden City Elementary Park sits next to the elementary of the same name. The grounds have a public play space, tennis courts and a baseball diamond. Ray Green Park supports the Jacksonville BMX group, attracting youth and adult riders.Fireworks in Highlands
During the Fourth of July, the neighborhood hosts a fireworks display managed by the city. The location centers around Ray Green Park, which is closed during the event, but the illuminating show can be seen for miles.
