Murray Hill was once a small town
In Murray Hill, near downtown Jacksonville, pedestrians and bicyclists often pass century-old homes and colorful murals. Once an incorporated town, Murray Hill became a part of the city in 1925. Today, the neighborhood offers an eclectic blend of older homes, green spaces and restaurants. "I've spent time in Murray Hill, and what's always mentioned is the historic value and vibe of the homes. They are held to a different standard," says Chance Pollart, a Jacksonville resident and Realtor with Momentum Realty. The community also has a robust yet casual dining scene along Edgewood Avenue. The area is considered a part of the city's Riverside-Avondale area, known for its historic architecture and artistic charm. "Murray Hill definitely has an artistic style, being close to the Riverside area," Pollart says. Public art characterizes this part of Jacksonville, which includes portions of the Downtown Public Art Tour. A new mural was recently commissioned for an overpass on Roosevelt Boulevard, with a plan to add a lighting display.

Shopping and Dining on Edgewood Avenue
Several local eateries and storefronts line Edgewood Avenue. Allen Williams, a Real Estate Advisor at Lokation Real Estate, says that Murray Hill "has cool, young vibes with unique restaurants and breweries." The popular spot, Moon River Pizza, sells custom pies in a brightly colored, funky setting with unique artistic displays. Vegan dining options include Murray Hillbilly - Vegan Restaurant and The Walrus, a local bar with boozy smoothies. Fishweir Brewing Company is known for its trendy yet laid-back atmosphere and wide selection of drinks. The Murray Hill Farmers Market is held in the brewery's parking lot every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The neighborhood is also home to Jacksonville's oldest dessert stand, The Dreamette, which only accepts cash payments. Pollart recommends restaurants in the nearby Riverside community to the east. "Blue Orchid Thai Cuisine on Riverside Avenue is by the water, next to Memorial Park," Pollart says. To the west, at Normandy Village retail center, are more local businesses and a Winn-Dixie supermarket.

Supported by the Murray Hill Preservation Society
The Murray Hill Preservation Society has helped maintain the area's historic charm since 1932. The group hosts the farmers market and the Murray Hill-O-Ween, a local event featuring a parade, food trucks and a pumpkin patch. The community landmark Murray Hill Theater was transformed from a movie cinema to a performance venue in 1995. Next door, the neighborhood library hosts musical showcases and private events.
Murray hill has historic and new homes
Murry Hill's roadways contain homes from the 1910s to the 2020s. Among the well-maintained residences are updated bungalows, renovated midcentury cottages and prairie styles. A new traditional house from the 21st century can also sit next to residences built before the 1950s. Pollert says the neighborhood is quieter and more peaceful than nearby historic communities, Avondale and Riverside. Starter homes and bungalows often range in price between $150,000 and $375,000, depending on size and level of renovation. Larger 20th-century dwellings, over 1,500 square feet, can range from $250,000 to $475,000. Houses built over the last 20 years range between $275,000 and $425,000. According to a 2024 resiliency study for the area, Murray Hill and nearby communities have a risk of flooding.

Surrounded by I-10 and Roosevelt Boulevard
Interstate 10 and the busy Roosevelt Boulevard border the area. Bus stops are scattered along McDuff Avenue and Post Street, but most commuters travel by car. Traffic can get heavy around major roadways; the city is constructing a roundabout to ease congestion at the intersection of Post Street, McDuff Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. There are multiple houses of worship in and around the community, including Murray Hill Presbyterian Church and The Potter's House International Ministries. The nearest major medical facility, Ascension St. Vincent's Riverside, is about 2 miles away. The city center awaits 5 miles from Murray Hill.
At Murray Hill Theatre, activities are for all ages and are focused on faith and positivity.

The neighborhood school is Ruth N. Upson Elementary
The community is home to Ruth N. Upson Elementary, which opened in 1916; the historic school has a B-plus grade from Niche. Elementary students are also zoned for Pinedale Elementary, which has a C-plus. Older students may attend Lake Shore Middle, which earns a C-minus, or the B-rated Riverside High. The district offers school choice, so families can apply to schools outside their attendance zone, but enrollment is determined through a lottery.

Murray hill is a very youth influenced neighborhood. The people moving in are typically young couples or young families which makes for a pretty calm community.
