Jamestown’s place in gold rush and Hollywood history
In 1848, Benjamin Wood was the first to strike gold in Tuolumne County, sparking the founding of Jamestown, also known as the "Gateway to the Mother Lode." History is well preserved within Jamestown's old buildings and state park, and the creek bearing Wood's name that still draws in gold panners. Jamestown's wild-west setting and views of Tabletop Mountain have also made it a backdrop for numerous Hollywood films. "When they do projects, they always pull extras from the community," says Michelle A'Dair, a local Realtor specializing in the area and working for Friends Real Estate Services who has played an extra herself. Jamestown is located on the Golden Chain Highway corridor and offers easy access to other gold rush-era towns in the valley. Some parts of Jamestown reach New Melones Lake and Don Pedro Reservoir, and it's just a day trip to Yosemite National Park.

A housing market meeting different lifestyles
Jamestown's housing market is eclectic, with manufactured homes, historic workman cottages, larger single-family homes, ranches and senior living communities. "We also have houses overlooking the lake and reservoir, as well as some historic homes," A'Dair says. "There's a lot of renewal, a lot of people who've bought old Victorians right on the main street and updated them." Homes in the countryside can be on 20 acres or more. Some come with RV and boat parking, wood-burning stoves, horse fencing and chicken coops. Smaller cottages on the eastern side of town may be on lots less than 5,000 square feet and are within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The median sale price is $435,000 but homes by the lake or those on over 100 acres enter the millions.

From the historic park to the trail, lake and campground
Rocca Park is downtown, with a playground and picnic areas. It's the starting point for Jamestown's "Walk of Fame," a sidewalk dotted by medallions paying homage to numerous movies and shows filmed in Jamestown. The sidewalk leads to Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, where visitors can take train rides on historic locomotives. The park also houses Sierra No.3, which has appeared in hundreds of movies, including Back to the Future III, and made its Hollywood debut in 1920. California Gold Panning guides excursions in Jamestown, but people also explore streams independently. "Someone was just messing around and found a huge nugget near Jamestown," A'Dair says. "It made the news." Jamestown's Table Mountain Trail leads to the top of Table Mountain, where hikers can take in views of New Melones Lake. This lake and Don Pedro Reservoir are popular boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and camping spots. The public championship course at Teleli Golf Club is within 6 miles. Yosemite is roughly 45 miles from town.
