A quiet town rich with history
Known for its rich history in coal mining, the quiet town of Jasper can be traced back to the early 1800s when the first trading post was established in the area. By 1822, it took shape as its own town with the construction of a log cabin that served as the courthouse, school and church. Named in memory of Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper, it was incorporated as a city in 1887. “Jasper City has a slower-paced lifestyle compared to bigger cities,” says Ashley Grounds, Realtor with Keller Williams-Jasper. “It has a nice downtown area that’s walkable, with lots of restaurants and stores.”

Jasper history, music and the Fall Festival
History buffs can enjoy the Bankhead Heritage House and Museum. Built around 1924, the house is a great example of Colonial Revival architecture and steeped in history. Its original owner, William Brockman Bankhead, served as the 47th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his daughter, actress Tallulah Bankhead, got married in this house. It was also home to other prominent families in Jasper. In 2010, the house was restored and converted into a Heritage Center for the Fayette, Marion, Walker and Winston areas. In addition to museum exhibits, events are held during the summer at the amphitheater, from live music performances to movie screenings. These aren’t the only events that bring people in Jasper together. “In the fall we have the Foothills Festival,” says Grounds. The Foothills Festival brings the entire community together in a two-day event that’s both a music festival and a large, local market, with vendors celebrating Southern craft and cuisine.
