Tennessee mountain living without the selclusion
Jasper sits 25 miles west of downtown Chattanooga, but it has a self-contained atmosphere that’s attractive to buyers who want a quiet and quaint lifestyle. There’s a bona fide Main Street with shopping, dining, a public library, a park and the like. But zooming out, it’s clear that Jasper is an outdoorsy community. The neighborhood sits in the Sequatchie Valley, surrounded by mountain views. Nickajack Lake, a popular fishing spot, is just 6 miles east. While primarily a suburban neighborhood, there are gated communities popping up with amenities ranging from restaurants to walking trails to helicopter pads, as noted by Realtor Gloria Page, who's been working in the area over a decade, and is currently with Keller Williams and Zach Taylor Real Estate. "A lot of people from other states want the Tennessee mountain experience, and Jasper Highlands definitely gives them that, since it's way high up looking over all creation. They want to be away from hecticness, and retire in peace and quiet, but they don’t want to be secluded, so places like Jasper Highlands are appealing with all these amenities."
Homes from the 90s through today
The market begins in the low $200,000s with minimal traditional homes, which can be up to four bedrooms. Homebuyers are likely to encounter ranches from the 90s by expanding into the mid $300,000s. Sprawling multi-story brick homes with five bedrooms can be had in the low $600,000s. Three-bedroom modern traditional homes, built in 2022 for gated communities like the Jasper Highlands will also be in this price range. Generally, sidewalks aren’t present in residential portions of Jasper, even though the streets are calm. Lawns are dotted with small ornamental plantings, which keep the homes unobstructed from view. Mature trees tower from the edges of lawns, giving the area an uncomplicated suburban look.

Smoketastic food at Whiskey Throttle BBQ
Page says there are a few restaurants around Jasper, but residents can be just as likely to dine in downtown Chattanooga or even Alabama. To get their hit of smoked brisket, customers dine at Whiskey Throttle BBQ. Outside the low-slung building, cords of wood are piled – fuel to be used in the large black smoker. Kanti’s Bar and Grill offers more of a sports bar vibe, with large booths and a row of TVs. Rebecca’s FarmHouse Restaurant takes patrons into an Americana diner atmosphere by way of country stylings like corrugated metal walls. The menu is chocked with Southern comfort food like fried pickles and breaded catfish. At Ingles Markets, practically any ingredient needed for dinner can be found. Page also recommends Redpoint Inn, a unique mix of sandwiches, homemade desserts and climbing gear before heading out to the trails. Thyme for Home Decor is another locally-owned business, full of unique domestic items, from lamps to blankets.

It’s 25 miles to downtown Chattanooga, thanks to the presence of Interstate 24, which runs along the south. Page says that downtown Chattanooga is popular because it's so walkable and bikeable. Route 28 intersects with Main Street, and is a key path for residents who want to travel north-south through the neighborhood.

Demolition derby at the fair
The Marion County Fair occurs annually in November, and besides offering live music and locally prepared food, it gives attendees a chance to watch a demolition derby. Carnival rides are present, and there’s even an old-school competition for jams, cakes and pies. There's also the National Cornbread Festival in late April, which draws out visitors from around the region.
